Stephen Laybutt
Stephen John Laybutt (3 September 1977 – 13 January 2024) was an Australian professional soccer player who played as a defender (association football), defender. Laybutt came out as gay in 2021. He died by suicide in January 2024. Early life and career Laybutt was born in Lithgow and played youth football at the FFA Centre of Excellence, Australian Institute of Sport before starting his senior career with Wollongong Wolves FC, Wollongong City in 1995. As well as playing for a number of clubs in the National Soccer League and Newcastle Jets FC, Newcastle Jets in the A-League, Laybutt played professionally in Japan, the Netherlands, Norway and Belgium. He retired from professional football in 2008. He won fifteen cap (sport), caps with the Australia men's national soccer team, Australian national team. Newcastle United Jets Football Club, commonly known as Newcastle Jets, is an Australian professional soccer club based in Newcastle, New South Wales. It competes in the country's premier competition, the A-League, under licence from The Australian Professional Leagues (APL). formerly under licence by Football Australia. The club was formed in 2000 when it joined the National Soccer League (NSL) and was one of only three former NSL clubs to join in the formation of the A-League.
