William Christopher Smither (born November 11, 1944) is an American folk/blues singer, guitarist, and songwriter. His music draws deeply from the blues, American folk music, and modern poets and philosophers. Early life, influences and education He was born in Miami, Florida, United States to Catherine(nee Weaver) and William J. Smither. Although Smither does not himself credit family influence to his talents, uncle Howard E. Smither was an award-winning musicologist and author, and father William was a leading professor of Spanish and Mexican culture. The family was well traveled. They lived in Ecuador and the Rio Grande Valley in Texas before settling in New Orleans when Chris was three years old. He grew up in New Orleans, and lived briefly in Paris where he and his twin sister Mary Catherine attended French public school. Michael Smither
Michael Duncan Smither (born 29 October 1939) is a New Zealand painter and composer. Background Smither was born in New Plymouth and was educated at New Plymouth Boys' High School and Elam School of Fine Arts, Auckland. While studying he worked part-time in a car spray-paint shop, an occupation which introduced Smither to the use of lacquer-based paints. In 1959, Smither returned to New Plymouth, working part-time in arts-related jobs. His first solo exhibition was in 1961. In 1963 he married Elizabeth Harrington, who is better known as New Zealand Poet Elizabeth Smither. The two have three children, Sarah, Thomas and Joseph. Smither separated from Elizabeth and eventually divorced. For a few years he was married to Rachel McAlpine, a writer. Smither now lives at Otama beach on the Coromandel Peninsula. Elizabeth Smither
Elizabeth Edwina Smither (born 15 September 1941) is a New Zealand poet and writer. Life and career Smither was born in New Plymouth, and worked there part-time as a librarian. Her first collection of poetry, ''Here Come the Clouds'', was published in 1975, when she was in her mid-thirties. She has since published over fifteen poetry collections, as well as several short story collections and novels. Her work has won numerous notable awards, including three times the top poetry award at the New Zealand Book Awards. In 2002, she was named the New Zealand Poet Laureate. Harry Ricketts, writing for ''The Oxford Companion to New Zealand Literature'', describes her strength as being "the short poem, usually but not always unrhymed, witty, stylish and intellectually curious". He also notes that her poetry tends to feature figures from literature and legends, as well as Catholicism. Henry Carpenter Smither (July 28, 1873 – July 13, 1930) was a United States Army officer and American football coach. He served as the head football coach at the United States Military Academy from 1906 to 1907, compiling a record of 7–2–1. Smither was born on July 28, 1873, at Fort Sill and was the son General Robert Gano Smither. He attended schools in Burlington, Iowa, and graduated from West Point in 1897. Smither was a commanding officer during the Spanish–American War and the Philippine–American War. During World War I, he served as an adjutant to Peyton C. March, the Chief of Staff of the United States Army. Smither was promoted to brigadier general in 1925. James George Smither FRIBA (1833–1910) was an Irish architect and a Ceylonese public servant. He served as Ceylon's first Government Architect in the Public Works Department, for eighteen years, between 1865 and 1883. In 1869 he was made a fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects. The same year he designed the Victorian Gothic Revival style All Saints' Church in Galle Fort. In 1873 he was responsible for designing and overseeing the reconstruction/conversion of the Grand Oriental Hotel and the construction of the former Colombo Town Hall, together with the adjoining public markets (Edinburgh Hall).
