History Skidmore College has undergone many transformations since its founding in the early 20th century as a women's colleges in the United States, women's college. The Young Women's Industrial Club was formed in 1903 by Lucy Ann Skidmore (1853–1931) with inheritance money from her husband who died in 1879, and from her father, Joseph Russell Skidmore (1821–1882), a former coal merchant. In 1911, the club was chartered under the name "Skidmore School of Arts" as a college to vocationally and professionally train young women. Skidmore is a surname which originated in England in the early Middle Ages. Origins Until roughly Tudor times, the Scudamore/Scudemore surname (of which Skidmore is a variant) was mainly associated with a few aristocratic families in Herefordshire (at Rowlstone, Ewyas Harold and Holme Lacy), and also in Gloucestershire (at Westerleigh), and Wiltshire (Upton Scudamore), and Hertfordshire (at Rickmansworth). Ralph de Scudemer ('Scudemer' is believed to have been a lost place-name in Normandy) was a stonemason, brought over from Normandy by the English King Edward the Confessor before the Norman Conquest, around 1060, to help to build castles along the Welsh border, as the Saxons knew little of stone castle-building and were building castles mainly of wood. Skidmore Fountain
The Skidmore Fountain is a historic fountain in Portland, Oregon, United States. The fountain is a contributing property of and the namesake for the Skidmore/Old Town Historic District, which is also a National Historic Landmark. The fountain has also been designated a Portland Historic Landmark and underwent restoration in 2005. History It was dedicated September 22, 1888, in memory of Stephen G. Skidmore, a wealthy Portland druggist who died in 1883, and partly financed by his will. It was designed by sculptor Olin Levi Warner for $18,000, all of which was donated. It is styled after fountains Skidmore viewed at Versailles on his visit to the 1878 Paris Exposition and intended for "horses, men and dogs" to drink from. Henry Weinhard offered to pump beer into the fountain at the dedication. It is Portland's "oldest piece of public art". Skidmore, Missouri
Skidmore is a city in western Nodaway County, Missouri, United States. The population was 245 at the 2020 Census. The small farming community is known for the unsolved murder of Ken Rex McElroy. Skidmore also has a yearly "Punkin' Show." History The Skidmore area was first settled in 1840 by William Bunton shortly after the Platte Purchase opened the area to settlement. Skidmore itself was platted in 1880 when M. Skidmore donated to the Nodaway Valley Railroad Company (the agent for the Kansas City, St. Joseph and Council Bluffs Railroad which was eventually taken over by the Burlington Northern Railroad). The railroad no longer operates. The St. Oswald's Protestant Episcopal Church was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992. Skidmore is a census-designated place (CDP) in Bee County, Texas, United States. The population was 925 at the 2010 census. Geography Skidmore is located in southern Bee County at (28.255244, -97.681956). U.S. Route 181 passes through the community, leading north to Beeville, the county seat, and southeast to Sinton. Texas State Highway 359 leads southwest from Skidmore to Interstate 37 on the outskirts of Mathis. According to the United States Census Bureau, the Skidmore CDP has a total area of , all of it land.
