Skene (automobile)
The Skene was an American automobile manufactured from 1900 to 1901. A twin-cylinder 5-hp steam car, it was built in Lewiston, Maine. History J. W. Skene Cycle Company of Lewiston finished its first steam carriage in 1900. R. H. B. Warburton of Springfield, Massachusetts helped Skene organize, with a capital stock of $500,000, the Skene American Automobile Company. Company headquarters were in Springfield, the factory remained in Maine. The Skene was a simple steam buggy with a 5-Horsepower, hp Single- and double-acting cylinders, double-acting Straight-twin engine, two-cylinder engine and had a boiler with a working pressure of 160 pounds. The gasoline and water tanks were sufficient for a 25-mile run. All parts of the Skene were built in the Lewiston plant, a fact in which the Skene company took pride. Skene, Aberdeenshire
Skene (Scottish Gaelic language, Gaelic: ''Sgainn'') is a small farming community in North East Scotland some 10 km west of Aberdeen. The two traditional villages are :wikt:kirk-town, Kirkton of Skene and Lyne of Skene. As the name suggests, Kirkton is still the location of Skene Parish Church. ''Lyne'' means 'glade' or 'enclosure'. Skene Boats was a Canadian boat builder based in Gloucester, Ontario, now part of the city of Ottawa. The company specialized in the manufacture of fibreglass sailboats. It was founded in 1968 and went out business in 1992. History The company was founded by Donald Skene in 1968. Two years later, in 1970, he sold the company to F. Wallis White and George Carlyle. In the theatre of ancient Greece, the ''skene'' was the structure at the back of a stage. The word means 'tent' or 'hut', and it is thought that the original structure for these purposes was a tent or light building of wood and was a temporary structure. Skene! Records was an American DIY punk rock record label founded in Connecticut in 1988 by Jeff Spiegel, then later based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. An early album release was ''Better Yet Connecticut Hardcore'', featuring bands such as Bug Gulp, Fallback, Freedom of Choice, Forced Reality and Scooter X. Spiegel also promoted local punk shows in central Connecticut. The most infamous of which being "the greatest show that never happened", showcased at the New Britain VFW hall and featuring bands such as Big Gulp, Freedom of Choice, and Fallback. Shortly after the show began, during Fallback's set, a fight broke out and the show was forcibly shut down by the New Britain Police department; some of the footage was caught on a video tape that seems to have been lost.
