Schleswig-Flensburg
Schleswig-Flensburg (; da, Slesvig-Flensborg) is a district in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. It is bounded by (from the south and clockwise) the districts of Rendsburg-Eckernförde, Dithmarschen and Nordfriesland, the Region Syddanmark in Denmark, the city of Flensburg and the Baltic Sea. History Written history in the area began about 800 AD, when the Danish Viking settlement of Haithabu was founded. Later the neighbouring city of Schleswig took the place of Haithabu and became a powerful town in the 11th century. It later lost its power to Lübeck. The district was established in 1974 by merging the former districts of Flensburg-Land and Schleswig. Due to the proximity of Denmark and the regional history there is a large percentage of Danish inhabitants. Geography The countryside is generally plain. City Of Schleswig
Schleswig (, , ; da, Slesvig; South Jutlandic: ''Sljasvig''; nds, Sleswig; archaic English: ''Sleswick'') is a town in the northeastern part of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. It is the capital of the '' Kreis'' (district) Schleswig-Flensburg. It has a population of about 27,000, the main industries being leather and food processing. It takes its name from the Schlei, an inlet of the Baltic sea at the end of which it sits, and ''vik'' or ''vig'' which means "bay" in Old Norse and Danish. Schleswig or Slesvig therefore means "bay of the Schlei". History The Viking settlement of Hedeby, located south of the modern town, was first mentioned in 804. Glücksburg
Glücksburg (; da, Lyksborg) is a small town northeast of Flensburg in the district Schleswig-Flensburg, in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany and is the northernmost town in Germany. It is situated on the south side of the Flensborg Fjord, an inlet of the Baltic Sea, approx. 10 km northeast of Flensburg. The town was originally the home of the family '' Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg'' (or simply ''Glücksburg''), members of which have reigned in the past in Greece and several northern German states. Members of the family still reign in Denmark and Norway since 1863 and 1905 respectively. Glücksburg was home to a German Navy base. Among the facilities at the base is the transmitter, callsign DHJ58. Kappeln ( da, Kappel) is a town in the district of Schleswig-Flensburg, in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. Hollingstedt ( da, Hollingsted) is a municipality in the district of Schleswig-Flensburg, in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, located on the Treene river. History Here, in 449 the Angles are said to have boarded their vessels to sail down the Treene - Eider river system across the North Sea to Britain. In an engraved map from the year 1596, Hollingstedt is indicated as port of embarkation. During Viking times, Hollingstedt served as a transhipment port for a ten mile portage to Hedeby on the Schlei inlet of the Baltic, cutting short a long and perilous circumnavigation of the Jutland Peninsula. Dithmarschen (, Low Saxon: ; archaic English: ''Ditmarsh''; da, Ditmarsken; la, label=Medieval Latin, Tedmarsgo) is a district in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany.
