Catacomb Church
The Catacomb Church (russian: Катакомбная церковь) as a collective name labels those representatives of the Russian Orthodox clergy, laity, communities, monasteries, brotherhoods, etc., who for various reasons, have moved to an illegal position since the 1920s. In a narrow sense, the term "catacomb church" means not just illegal communities, but communities that rejected subordination to the Acting patriarchal ''locum tenens'' Metropolitan Sergius (Stragorodsky) after 1927, and adopted anti-Soviet positions. During the Cold War the ROCOR popularized the term in the latter sense, first within the Russian diaspora, and then in the USSR by sending illegal literature there.''Беглов А. True Russian Orthodox Church
The Penza Recluses (russian: Пензенские затворники, True Russian Orthodox Church, TROC; russian: Настоящая русская православная церковь) was an Independent Russian doomsday cult founded by Pyotr Kuznetsov which borrowed some ideas from Eastern Orthodoxy. The self-name of the group was "Heavenly Jerusalem" (russian: Горний Иерусалим). This group broke away from the Russian Orthodox Church, considering it insufficiently orthodox. Its members were not allowed to eat processed food, watch television or handle money. They rejected bar codes, National identification number and passports because they contained satanic symbols ("the number of the Beast"). In November 2007, between 29 and 35 members of the group holed themselves up in a cave in Russia's Penza region, near the village Nikolskoye, threatening mass suicide if authorities tried to intervene.
