Roskilde
Roskilde ( , ) is a city west of Copenhagen on the Danish island of Zealand. With a population of 51,916 (), the city is a business and educational centre for the region and the 10th largest city in Denmark. It is governed by the administrative council of Roskilde Municipality. Roskilde has a long history, dating from the pre-Christian Viking Age. Its UNESCO-listed Gothic cathedral, now housing 39 tombs of the Danish monarchs, was completed in 1275, becoming a focus of religious influence until the Reformation. With the development of the rail network in the 19th century, Roskilde became an important hub for traffic with Copenhagen, and by the end of the century, there were tobacco factories, iron foundries and machine shops. Roskilde Cathedral
Roskilde Cathedral ( da, Roskilde Domkirke), in the city of Roskilde on the island of Zealand (Denmark), Zealand (''Sjælland'') in eastern Denmark, is a cathedral of the Lutheranism, Lutheran Church of Denmark. The cathedral is the most important church in Denmark, the official royal burial church of the Danish monarchs, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This is due to two criteria: the architecture of the cathedral shows 800 years of European architectural styles, and it is one of the earliest examples in Scandinavia of a Gothic architecture, Gothic cathedral to be built in brick; it encouraged the spread of the Brick Gothic style throughout Northern Europe. Roskilde Festival
The Roskilde Festival is a Danish music festival held annually south of Roskilde. It is one of the largest music festivals in Europe and the largest in the Nordic countries. It was created in 1971 by two high school students and a promoter. In 1972, the festival was taken over by the Roskilde Foundation, which has since run the festival as a non-profit organization for development and support of music, culture and humanism. In 2014, the Roskilde Foundation provided festival participants with the opportunity to nominate and vote upon which organizations should receive funds raised by the festival. The Roskilde Festival was Denmark's first music-oriented festival created for hippies, and today covers more of the mainstream youth from Scandinavia and the rest of Europe. Viking Ship Museum (Roskilde)
The Viking Ship Museum ( da, Vikingeskibsmuseet) in Roskilde is Denmark's national ship museum for ships of the prehistoric and medieval period. The main focus of the museum is a permanent exhibition of the Skuldelev ships, five original Viking ships excavated nearby in 1962. The Viking Ship Museum also conducts research and educates researchers in the fields of maritime history, marine archaeology and experimental archaeology. Various academic conferences are held here and there is a research library in association with the museum. Original Viking ships Around the year 1070, five Viking ships were deliberately sunk at Skuldelev in Roskilde Fjord in order to block the most important fairway and to protect Roskilde from an enemy attack from the sea. Roskilde Municipality
Roskilde municipality ( da, Roskilde kommune) is a municipality in Region Sjælland, 30 km west of Copenhagen on the island of Zealand (''Sjælland'') in east Denmark. The biggest city is Roskilde, the municipality covers an area of 212 km², and it has a total population of around 90,000 (2022). Its current mayor is Tomas Breddam. He is a member of Socialdemokraterne. Neighboring municipalities are Egedal to the northeast, Greve and Solrød to the southeast, Høje-Taastrup to the east, Køge to the south and Lejre to the west. Roskilde Cathedral School
Roskilde Cathedral School ( da, Roskilde Katedralskole, Roskilde Domskole) is a historic high school in Roskilde, Denmark. It was established around 1020 with close connections to Roskilde Cathedral. The school has since 1969 been located on Holbækvej in the western part of the city while its old main building next to the cathedral now houses Roskilde Gymnasium, another high school. History The school was probably established in the early 11th century (c. 1020) in connection with the cathedral. It was initially designed for the education of priests who could serve the cathedral. Football Club Roskilde is a Danish professional association football club based in Roskilde, Region Zealand. They will compete in the Danish 2nd Division in the 2022–23 season following their promotion. Zealand University Hospital, Roskilde (former name Roskilde Sygehus) is the main hospital in Roskilde on the Danish island of Zealand. It should not be confused with Zealand University Hospital, Køge (formerly named Køge Sygehus). Zealand University Hospital, Roskilde was founded in 1855, and as of 2014 it had 437 beds for in-patients and several specialist wards. Roskilde Roklub (English: Roskilde Rowing Club) is a rowing club based in Roskilde, Denmark. Its home water is Roskilde Fjord. History The club was founded in 1890. Roskilde Vikings RK
Roskilde Vikings Rugby Klub began on 22 August 2010 when around 15 players attended the first ever training session. There had apparently also been an earlier attempt to start a rugby club in Roskilde, but little is known about this. The club was established under the auspices of Vor Frue Idræts Forening after committee member Kenneth Nielsen noticed that the club's facilities were under-utilised. He had first encountered rugby as an exchange student in Perth, Australia in 1995 and thought it might bring it much-needed new membership. The board of Vor Frue IF agreed and invested in the necessary equipment to get things started and continues to oversee the sporting activities while the rugby club focuses on promoting the game of rugby and raising funds. Zealand
Zealand ( da, Sjælland ) at 7,031 km2 is the largest and most populous island in Denmark proper (thus excluding Greenland and Disko Island, which are larger in size). Zealand had a population of 2,319,705 on 1 January 2020. It is the 13th-largest island in Europe by area and the 4th most populous. Sankt Hans Hospital
Sankt Hans Hospital is a psychiatric hospital in Roskilde on the Danish island of Zealand, 30 km from Copenhagen. Although situated in the Zealand Region, it is owned by the Capital Region and serves patients from that region. The land was bought by the forerunner of Copenhagen Municipality at the beginning of the 1800s so it could relocate the municipality's psychiatric hospital to a more rural location. With a history beginning in 1620, the hospital now has 180 beds and offers specialized treatment in the areas of forensic psychiatry and dual diagnosis.
