Plzeň (; German and English: Pilsen, in German ) is a city in the Czech Republic. About west of Prague in western Bohemia, it is the fourth most populous city in the Czech Republic with about 169,000 inhabitants. The city is known worldwide for Pilsner beer, created by Bavarian brewer Josef Groll in the city in 1842. Plzeň Region
Plzeň Region ( cs, Plzeňský kraj; german: Pilsner Region) is an administrative unit (''kraj'') in the western part of Bohemia in the Czech Republic. It is named after its capital Plzeň (English, german: Pilsen). In terms of area, Plzeň Region is 7,561 km2, the third largest region in the Czech Republic. However, with a population of about 585,000 inhabitants it is only the ninth most populous region. After the South Bohemian Region it is the second least densely populated region. The region can be roughly divided into two parts: a highly industrialized north-eastern part with a strong engineering tradition around Pilsen ( cs, Plzeň) and a more hilly and rural south-western part with smaller-sized manufacturing companies processing natural resources. Starý Plzenec (; german: Altpilsen) is a town in Plzeň-City District in the Plzeň Region of the Czech Republic. It has about 5,200 inhabitants. Administrative parts The village of Sedlec is an administrative part of Starý Plzenec. Geography Starý Plzenec lies on the Úslava River. The highest point of the municipal territory is the Radyně Hill with above sea level. History The first written mention of the settlement is from a chronicle of Thietmar of Merseburg and dates to 976, when Boleslaus II, Duke of Bohemia defeated a Bavarian army below a local stronghold, then called ''Plzeň''. Districts of the Czech Republic are territorial units, formerly used as second-level administrative divisions of the Czech Republic. After their primary administrative function has been abolished in 2003, they still exist for the activities of specific authorities and as statistical units. Their administrative function was moved to selected municipalities. Pilsner
Pilsner (also pilsener or simply pils) is a type of pale lager. It takes its name from the Bohemian city of Plzeň (german: Pilsen), where the world's first pale lager (now known as Pilsner Urquell) was produced in 1842 by Pilsner Urquell Brewery. History Origin The city of Plzeň was granted brewing rights in 1307, but until the mid-1840s, most Bohemian beers were top- fermented. Originally called in german: Bürger-Brauerei Pilsen ( cs, Měšťanský pivovar Plzeň, en, Citizens' Brewery), it is now known as Pilsner Urquell Brewery. It was here they began to brew beer in the Bavarian style. Náměstí Republiky, Plzeň
The Square of the Republic (in Czech ''Naměstí republiky'') forms the historical centre of Plzeň, Czech Republic. With a size of it is one of the largest medieval squares in the Czech lands. Plzeň as a town appears at the end of the 13th century, the square existing since then. Around the oblong square regular blocks of houses delimitated by a rectangular network of streets were built. Archaeologists have identified wooden pavement from the 13th century and another three layers of pavement from the 14th century. The square was cobblestoned in 1859. The stones were replaced by asphalt cover in the 20th century; this replaced again with cobblestones during 2005-2007 reconstruction. Statutory City (Czech Republic)
In the Czech Republic, a statutory city ( cs, statutární město) is a municipal corporation that has been granted city status by Act of Parliament. It is more prestigious than the simple title ' ("town"), which can be awarded by the cabinet and chair of the Chamber of Deputies to a municipality which applies for it. Differences of statutory city Statutory city status is partially ceremonial; the mayor is called ', rather than the ' of other municipalities. Statutory cities are allowed to subdivide into self-governing city boroughs (sg. Hussite Wars
The Hussite Wars, also called the Bohemian Wars or the Hussite Revolution, were a series of civil wars fought between the Hussites and the combined Catholic forces of Holy Roman Emperor Sigismund, the Papacy, European monarchs loyal to the Catholic Church, as well as various Hussite factions. At a late stage of the conflict, the Utraquists changed sides in 1432 to fight alongside Roman Catholics and opposed the Taborites and other Hussite spinoffs. These wars lasted from 1419 to approximately 1434. The unrest began after pre-Protestant Christian reformer Jan Hus was executed by the Catholic Church in 1415 for heresy. Techmania Science Center
Techmania Science Center is one of the first science centers in the Czech Republic and an important institution of informal education. The project was established in 2005 by the Škoda Transportation joint-stock company and the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen. The intention has been to build up a modern, interactive center (often known as a science center) in the industrial estate of the Škoda company.
