Philco (an acronym for Philadelphia Battery Company) is an American electronics industry, electronics manufacturer headquartered in Philadelphia. Philco was a pioneer in battery, radio, and television production. In 1961, the company was purchased by Ford Motor Company, Ford and, from 1966, renamed "Philco-Ford". The Philco Predicta is a black and white television chassis style, which was made in several cabinet models with 17” or 21” screens by the American company Philco from 1958 to 1960. The ''Predicta'' was marketed as the world’s first swivel screen television, and had an iconic design by Catherine Winkler with the picture tube ( CRT) separated from the rest of the cabinet. The safety mask on the front of the picture tube was made with the new organic plastic product by Eastman Plastics called “tenite” which protected the glass and provided implosion protection for the user and also gave it its iconic greenish tint. The ''Predicta'' also had a thinner picture tube than many other televisions at the time, which led it to be marketed as the more futuristic television set. Arthur Atwater Kent Sr. (December 3, 1873 – March 4, 1949) was an American inventor and prominent radio manufacturer based in Philadelphia. In 1921, he patented the modern form of the automobile ignition coil. Biography Arthur Kent was born on December 3, 1873, in Burlington, Vermont. The Kent family moved to Worcester, Massachusetts in 1881, where they lived at four different locations. His father was a doctor who had also been a machinist. The father maintained a machine shop in Worcester when Arthur was a child. Kent entered Worcester Polytechnic Institute’s freshman mechanical engineering class in the fall of 1895.
