Oey (pronounced "wee" ) () is a Chinese Indonesian surname of Hokkien origin and Dutch-based, West Java romanization. Literally "yellow", or "golden yellow", its Central Java romanization is Oei, while its pinyin version is Huang. Many Indonesians bearing this surname in Indonesia changed it to Indonesian-sounding surnames because of Cabinet Presidium Decision 127 of 1966—an anti-Chinese law that mandated that ethnic Chinese living in Indonesia adopt Indonesian names. Among Chinese-Malaysians and Singaporeans, the surname is often spelled Ooi or Wee. Oey Giok Koen, Kapitein der Chinezen (died in 1912) was a Chinese-Indonesian public figure, bureaucrat and ''Landheer'', best known for his role as '' Kapitein der Chinezen'' of Tangerang and Meester Cornelis, and as one of the richest landowners in the Dutch East Indies (modern-day Indonesia). As ''Kapitein'', he headed the local Chinese civil administration in Tangerang and Meester Cornelis as part of the Dutch colonial system of 'indirect rule'. Oey Tamba Sia (1827 – October 7, 1856), also spelt Oeij Tambah Sia, or often mistakenly Oey Tambahsia, was a rich, Chinese-Indonesian playboy hanged by the Dutch colonial government due to his involvement in a number of murder cases in Batavia, now Jakarta, capital of colonial Indonesia. Letnan Cina Oey Thai Lo (also known as ''Oey Thoa'' or ''Oey Se'') was a notable Chinese-Indonesian tycoon who acted as a '' pachter'' (tax farmer) for tobacco in the early 19th century. Indrawati Oey (born 29 April 1970) is a New Zealand food scientist, full professor at the University of Otago. Early life and education Oey was born in Malang, East Java, Indonesia in 1970.
