Neuruppin
Neuruppin (; North Brandenburgisch: ''Reppin'') is a town in Brandenburg, Germany, the administrative seat of Ostprignitz-Ruppin district. It is the birthplace of the novelist Theodor Fontane (1819–1898) and therefore also referred to as ''Fontanestadt''. A garrison town since 1688 and largely rebuilt in a Neoclassical style after a devastating fire in 1787, Neuruppin has the reputation of being "the most Prussian of all Prussian towns". Ruppiner See
Ruppiner See is a lake in Ostprignitz-Ruppin, Brandenburg, Germany. At an elevation of , its surface area is . It is believed to have formed as a glacial tunnel valley. History A Slavic fortification stood at the mouth of the Rhin on the northern shore. In the 12th century, the German settlement of Ruppin (now called Altruppin) was established next to it. A few decades later, Neuruppin was established on the southwest shore. A mill was built in Altfriesack, between the Ruppiner See and the Bützsee next to the Slavic settlement of Wustrau. The latter is probably the oldest settlement on the lake. Around the lake are other villages, which mostly now belong to the municipality of Neuruppin. Wustrau and Altfriesack now form one division in the municipality of Fehrbellin. Economic and strategic importance The lake was strategically important as it was the center of the Slavic area. Ostprignitz-Ruppin
Ostprignitz-Ruppin is a ''Kreis'' (district) in the northwestern part of Brandenburg, Germany. Neighboring are (from north clockwise) the districts Müritz and Mecklenburg-Strelitz in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the districts Oberhavel and Havelland, the district Stendal in Saxony-Anhalt, and the district Prignitz. Geography The district consists of plain countryside northwest of Berlin. It is densely forested. Many rivers and lakes can be found in its western, its central and its northeastern part. The main river in the district is the Dosse. History The district has always been distinguishable from the West Prignitz, having been settled originally by Slavs from a different part of Mecklenburg. Ruppin Switzerland
Ruppin Switzerland (german: Ruppiner Schweiz) is an elongated hilly forest region in the north of Brandenburg. To its west is the Kyritz-Ruppin Heath, to the north the Rheinsberg Lake District and to the east the Schorfheide heathland. Ruppin Switzerland lies in a wide belt of terminal moraine and runs from Neuruppin in the south to the village of Binenwalde in the north, the largest part of it being situated in the borough of Neuruppin. The central part of Ruppin Switzerland is the nature reserve of ''Ruppiner Seenrinne'' with its chain of lakes: the ''Kalksee'', ''Binenbach'', Tornowsee, ''Zermützelsee'', ''Tetzensee'', ''Molchowsee'' and Rhin. This lake sequence starts with the Kalksee and Tornowsee and runs for over 40 kilometres southwards to the upper part of the Rhinluch. Theodor Fontane
Theodor Fontane (; 30 December 1819 – 20 September 1898) was a German novelist and poet, regarded by many as the most important 19th-century German-language realist author. He published the first of his novels, for which he is best known today, only at age 58 after a career as a journalist. Fontane's novels are known for their complex, often sceptical view of society in the German empire; he shows different social and political parts of society meeting and sometimes clashing. Other trademarks of Fontane's work are their strongly drawn female characters (such as ''Effi Briest'' and '' Frau Jenny Treibel''), tender irony and vivid conversations between characters. Life Youth Fontane was born in Neuruppin, a town 30 miles northwest of Berlin, into a Huguenot family. At the age of sixteen he was apprenticed to an apothecary, his father's profession.
