The river flows from the confluence of its west and east forks in north-central West Virginia northeasterly into southwestern Pennsylvania, then northerly to Pittsburgh and its confluence with the Allegheny River to form the Ohio River. The river's entire length is navigable via a series of locks and dams. Etymology The Unami word ''Monongahela'' means "falling banks", in reference to the geological instability of the river's banks. Buffalo Creek is a tributary of the Monongahela River, long, in northern West Virginia, in the United States. Via the Monongahela and Ohio rivers, it is part of the watershed of the Mississippi River, draining an area of on the unglaciated portion of the Allegheny Plateau. The stream's entire course and drainage basin are in Marion County. Buffalo Creek rises near Marion County's western boundary, near the community of Brink, and flows generally eastward through the communities of Logansport, Mannington, Rachel, Farmington, Pine Grove, and Barrackville to Fairmont, where it flows into the Monongahela River from the west. Fairmont is a city in and county seat of Marion County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 18,313 at the 2020 census. Upshur County, West Virginia
Upshur County is a county in the U.S. state of West Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 23,816. Its county seat is Buckhannon. The county was formed in 1851 from Randolph, Barbour, and Lewis counties and named for Abel Parker Upshur, a distinguished statesman and jurist of Virginia. The West Fork River is a principal tributary of the Monongahela River, long, in north-central West Virginia, United States.
