An orthopedic cast, or simply cast, is a shell, frequently made from Plaster of Paris#Gypsum plaster (plaster of Paris), plaster or fiberglass, that encases a Limb (anatomy), limb (or, in some cases, large portions of the body) to stabilize and hold anatomical structures—most often a broken bone (or bones), in place until bone healing, healing is confirmed. In English, "plaster" usually means a material used for the interiors of buildings, while "render" commonly refers to external applications.
