Mayu Frontier District
The Mayu Frontier District ( my, မေယုနယ်ခြားခရိုင်) was a short-lived administrative zone of Burma (present-day Myanmar) which existed between 1961 and 1964. It covered the Maungdaw District of present-day Rakhine State in the historical region of Arakan. The zone was administered directly from the capital Rangoon (present-day Yangon). Geography The Mayu Frontier District was named after the Mayu River. It included Maungdaw Township, Buthidaung Township and a part of Rathedaung Township. The Mayu Range of mountains separated Maungdaw and Buthidaung. The Naf River estuary formed the northern boundary of the district, on the international border with East Pakistan. Background After the 1960 Burmese general election, Sultan Mahmud, the Burmese health minister, advocated a state for the Arakanese Indian community in the northern part of Arakan. The Mayu is a river in Rakhine State, Myanmar (Burma). The river and its surrounding region, known as the ''Mayu region'' or ''Mayu peninsula'', is named after the nearby ''Mayu Mountain''. Mayu Island
Mayu Island is a strategically located island in Shantou, Guangdong. It is unusual for having two Mazu temples on the same island. The island is located in the estuary of Shantou port, and has an area of 0.97 square kilometers, an elevation of 39 meters, and a coastline of 2.3 km. In the 19th century when Shantou was a treaty port, Mayu was the location of the British and American consulates and a customs house. Names The island was originally named Mǎyǔ () as it was thought to look like the front of a horse coming out of the water. Nowadays it is called Māyǔ (). In imperial times, it was called the "mountain (or island) for letting chickens go" (; ) due to the tradition of fishers bringing live chickens to the island's Mazu temple and letting them go. Rui'an (, Wenzhounese: ''zy iu'') is a county-level city along the southern coast of Zhejiang province, China, and is under the administration of Wenzhou City.
