Matsuo Shrine
, formerly , is a Shinto shrine located at the far western end of Shijō Street, approximately 1.3 kilometers south of the Arashiyama district of Kyoto. It is home to a Spring (hydrosphere), spring at the base of the mountain, Arashiyama, that is believed to be blessed. It is said that during the move of the capital from Nara, Nara, Nara to Kyoto, a noble saw a turtle bathing under the spring's waterfall and created a shrine there. It is one of the oldest shrines in the Kyoto area, its founding extending back to 700 CE. The restorative properties of the spring bring many local sake and miso companies to the shrine for prayers that their product will be blessed. The shrine also serves a ''kinpaku miki'' (gold leaf filled blessed sake) during ''hatsumōde''. History The shrine became the object of Imperial patronage during the early Heian period. Haiden (Shinto)
In Shinto shrine architecture, the is the hall of worship or oratory. It is generally placed in front of the shrine's main sanctuary (''honden'') and often built on a larger scale than the latter. The ''haiden'' is often connected to the ''honden'' by a '' heiden'', or hall of offerings. While the ''honden'' is the place for the enshrined ''kami'' and off-limits to the general public, the ''haiden'' provides a space for ceremonies and for worshiping the ''kami''. Emperor Murakami
was the 62nd emperor of Japan, Imperial Household Agency (''Kunaichō'') 村上天皇 (62)/ref> according to the traditional order of succession. Richard Arthur Brabazon Ponsonby-Fane (8 January 1878 – 10 December 1937) was a British academic, author, specialist of Shinto and Japanologist. John Breen (scholar)
John Lawrence Breen (born 3 March 1956) is a British academic and Japanologist. He is a specialist in Japanese history at the in Kyoto. He writes in English and Japanese on the history of Shinto and the imperial institution. Early life Breen was awarded his BA at the University of Cambridge in 1979. Twenty-Two Shrines
The of Japan is one ranking system for Shinto shrines. The system was established during the Heian period and formed part of the government's systematization of Shinto during the emergence of a general anti-Chinese sentiment and the suppression of the Taoist religion. It involved the establishment of the shrines as important centers of public life in Japan. It played a role in official imperial ceremonies such as the ''Practice of Chinkon''.
