Mariestad
Mariestad () is a locality and the seat of Mariestad Municipality, Västra Götaland County, Sweden. It had 16,611 inhabitants in 2019. Until 1997 it was the capital of the former Skaraborg County and an episcopal see in the Church of Sweden between 1583 and 1646. History The city was founded in 1583 by Duke Charles, who later became King Charles IX of Sweden. The city is named after the his wife Marie of Pfalz. The coat of arms for Mariestad, an ox stepping out of the water, is said to be what Marie of Pfalz saw by the bay of Tidan in Mariestad when she first arrived there. Diocese Mariestad is one of two Swedish cities with a cathedral without a bishop's seat, the other being Kalmar. For political reasons, the diocese of Mariestad was presided over by a superintendent rather than a bishop from 1583 until 1646, when the superintendent was moved to Karlstad and the diocese of Mariestad was absorbed by that of Skara. Mariestad Municipality (''Mariestads kommun'') is a municipality in Västra Götaland County in western Sweden. Its seat is located in the city of Mariestad. The present municipality was formed in 1971, when the ''City of Mariestad'' was amalgamated with four surrounding rural municipalities. Geography Mariestad Municipality is situated on Lake Vänern and is visited by many tourists in summer. The largest fresh water archipelago in Sweden lies within the municipality. Torsö and Brommö are the two largest islands. North of the city, in Sjötorp, Göta Canal meets Lake Vänern. Diocese Of Mariestad
The Diocese of Mariestad ( sv, Mariestads stift) was a division of the Church of Sweden between 1583–1646. The diocese was never an episcopal see, as it was under the supervision of a superintendent rather than a bishop. Mariestad cathedral is thus the only church building in Sweden to have gained the rank of cathedral despite never having been the seat of a bishop. (The cathedral of Kalmar was the seat of a bishop until 1915, when the diocese of Kalmar was absorbed by the diocese of Växjö.) In 1646, the superintendent moved to Karlstad and the diocese of Mariestad was absorbed into that of Skara. Disappearance Of Helena Andersson
22-year old Helena Andersson disappeared on 14 June 1992 in Mariestad, Sweden. Since then several different suspects in her disappearance have been arrested, and later released without charge. The disappearance has received extensive media attention since 1992. Disappearance She had been at a friend’s housewarming party in Töreboda, later in the evening she and a few friends decided to continue partying at the Stadshotellet nightclub in central Mariestad. At 2 in the morning she headed home by foot, an hour later several witnesses heard a woman screaming. About from her parents' home, Andersson's rings and sandals were found. Also found were drips of blood. She has not been heard from since. The first man to be a suspect was a Danish man who witnesses had seen driving a white car, allegedly picking up Helena Andersson and driving away from the Stadshotellet. Gustavus Schmidt
Gustavus Schmidt (16 June 1795 – 20 September 1877) was an American lawyer and lecturer on Civil Law at the University of Louisiana. He was the author of a number of law books and also founded the predecessor of the School of Law at Tulane University. Biography Gustavus Schmidt was born in Mariestad in Västra Götaland County, Sweden. He was educated at the classical school in Jönköpings, where his father, Hans Kristian Schmidt, was a judge of the Aulic Council for the south of Sweden. In 1810 he entered the Swedish Royal Navy. In 1815 he settled on the eastern shore of Maryland, where he was engaged as a private tutor. Five years later he went to Richmond, Virginia where he studied law and after being admitted to the Virginia State Bar, practiced the legal profession for a number of years. Skaraborg County
Skaraborg County ( sv, Skaraborgs län ) was a county of Sweden from 1634 until 1997. It was disestablished at the end of 1997 when it was merged with the counties of Gothenburg and Bohus and Älvsborg to form Västra Götaland County. The county was named after a fortress () outside the city of Skara. The seat of residence for the county governor was Mariestad from 1660 onwards and the largest city (during the 20th century) was first Lidköping and later Skövde. The county consisted of the northeastern part of the province of Västergötland. Even though Skaraborg County itself no longer exists, various organizations are still named after it, and cover that approximate area. Axel Lindahl
Axel Theodor Lindahl (27 July 1841 – 11 December 1906) was a Swedish photographer notable for his early photography of Norwegian landscapes. Lindahl was born in Mariestad in southwestern Sweden. With his brother Udo he opened his own photography studio in Uddevalla in 1865; within one year, his work was exhibited in museums. By around 1867, he had moved his business to Gothenburg. Once established there, he extended his interest to landscape photography, focusing initially on the Swedish west coast, and then moving into Norway. In 1883 he sold his interest in the studio in Sweden and made Norwegian landscapes his exclusive area of business, working closely with the publisher Rich. Andvord. Unlike many of his contemporary photographers who emphasized the dramatic nature of Norwegian landscapes, Lindahl sought in his composition the harmonious aesthetic of his subject matter.
