Franz Adam
Franz Adam (May 4, 1815 – September 30, 1886) was a German painter, chiefly of military subjects, born and active for much of his life in Italy. Life Adam was born in Milan, Italy, to painter Albrecht Adam, a German who had spent the prior several years in Italy. Franz Adam's first notable work was a collection of lithographs on the Revolutions of 1848 in the Italian states, done jointly with noted lithographer Denis Auguste Marie Raffet. He painted his first masterpiece during the Second Italian War of Independence of 1859, a scene from the Battle of Solferino. His best-known works, meanwhile, depict the Franco-Prussian War of 1870. Of Adam's students, Josef Brandt was the most notable. Adam also taught painting to his nephew, Emil Adam. His brothers Benno and Eugen were also painters. William Alexander (artist)
William Alexander (born Wilhelm Alexander; 2 April 1915 – 24 January 1997), known as Bill Alexander on his TV show, was a German painter, art instructor, and television host. He was the creator and host of '' The Magic of Oil Painting'' (1974–82) television series that ran on PBS in the United States. He co-wrote ''The Art of Bill Alexander and …'' (1987–95), a series of books on wet-on-wet oil painting, based on different PBS series of the same form. He also taught the television painter Bob Ross his signature "quick" wet-on-wet technique. Early life Wilhelm Alexander was born in East Prussia. His family fled to Berlin during World War I. Career Apprenticed as a carriage maker, Alexander was drafted into the Wehrmacht during World War II. Captured by Allied troops, he painted portraits of Allied officers' wives and he soon made his way to the United States. After World War II, Alexander was a refugee and became a professional painter. Heinrich Jacob Aldenrath
Heinrich Jakob Aldenrath (17 February 1775, Lübeck – 25 February 1844, Hamburg) was a portrait painter, miniaturist, and lithographer. Life Aldenrath was a pupil of Johann Jakob Tischbein and of Friedrich Carl Gröger, with whom he developed a friendship which lasted until Gröger's death in 1838. Together they attended the academies of Berlin, Dresden, and Paris. After periods in Lübeck, Kiel, and Copenhagen, they finally settled at Hamburg in 1814, and became celebrated as portrait painters. Aldenrath died in Hamburg in 1844. It is said that he painted the portrait of the King of Denmark no less than thirteen times. His lithographs include portraits of Friedrich Karl Gröger, the poets Klopstock and Count Stolberg, Adolphus, Duke of Cambridge, and his own self-portrait. Josef Albers
Josef Albers (; ; March 19, 1888March 25, 1976) was a German-born artist and educator. The first living artist to be given a solo show at MoMA and at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, he taught at the Bauhaus and Black Mountain College, headed Yale University's department of design, and is considered one of the most influential teachers of the visual arts in the twentieth century. As an artist, Albers worked in several disciplines, including photography, typography, murals and printmaking. He is best known for his work as an abstract painter and a theorist. His book ''Interaction of Color'' was published in 1963. Max Ainmiller
Maximilian Emanuel Ainmiller (14 February 1807 – 9 December 1870) was a German artist and glass painter. Under the tutorage of Friedrich von Gärtner, director of the royal Nymphenburg Porcelain Manufactory, Ainmiller studied glass painting, both as a mechanical process and as an art, at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. In 1828 he was appointed director of the newly founded royal painted-glass manufactory at Munich. The method which he gradually perfected there was a development of the enamel process adopted in the Renaissance, and consisted in actually painting the design upon the glass, which was subjected, as each colour was laid on, to carefully adjusted heating. The earliest specimens of Ainmiller's work are to be found in the cathedral of Regensburg. With a few exceptions, all the windows in Glasgow cathedral are from his hand. Wolfram Aichele
Wolfram Aïchele (29 April 1924 – 9 June 2016) was an artist from Baden-Württemberg in Southern Germany. His work has been exhibited in America, Germany, France, Belgium, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Luxembourg. His paintings have been acquired by the French state, the City of Paris, The Museum of the History and Art of Luxemburg, the State of Baden-Württemberg, the Federal Bank of Germany and Daimler-Benz, as well as many private collectors. Son of the distinguished animal artist, Erwin Aichele, Aïchele's Third Reich childhood is the subject of a 2011 book by the author and historian Giles Milton (who is also his son-in-law) called '' Wolfram: The Boy Who Went To War''. Aïchele's work has been the subject of a number of critical studies, notably Franz Elgar's ''Wolfram''. Erwin Aichele
Erwin Aichele (5 May 1887 – 29 June 1974) was a German painter and animal artist from Baden-Württemberg in Southern Germany. His life and work was the subject of a 1988 monograph, ''Der Tiermaler Erwin Aichele'' by Hans Schöner. Early years Erwin Aichele studied fine art at the State Academy of Fine Arts Karlsruhe. He continued his studies in the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich, where he was taught by the celebrated animal artist Heinrich von Zügel. In 1911, Aichele passed his art teaching diploma and started work at the jewelry school in Pforzheim, Southern Germany. War years In 1915, Erwin Aichele joined the army and was sent to France as part of a communications team. His talent in draughtsmanship quickly came to the notice of his commanding officer and he was given the official function of war artist. August Ahlborn
August Wilhelm Julius Ahlborn (October 11, 1796 – August 24, 1857) was a German landscape painter. Life Ahlborn was born in Hanover, son of the Hanoverian master tailor Heinrich Christian Ahlborn and Dorothea Elisabeth Röllecke. He entered the Prussian Academy of Arts (Berlin) in 1819, where he studied with Karl Wilhelm Wach. In 1826 he received the Academy Award for a portrait of the New Palace in Potsdam, and used the money to travel to Italy in 1827, where he was one of the founders of the Roman Kunstverein. In this period, he lived in Rome, Florence, and Ascoli. In December 1832, he married Therese, the daughter of a government official, in Berlin. In 1833 he became a member of the Prussian Academy. In Italy, Ahlborn and his wife converted to Roman Catholicism from Lutheranism, on August 15, 1837. Karl Agricola
Karl Joseph Aloys Agricola (18 October 1779 – 15 May 1852) was a German artist, noted for his portrait miniatures. Life and works Agricola was born at Bad Säckingen, Margraviate of Baden, in 1779. After a preliminary course of instruction in Karlsruhe, he went in 1798 to Vienna and enrolled the Academy, where he studied under Heinrich Füger. He soon became known for his mythological pictures in oil and watercolour – such as his ''Cupid and Psyche'' – and for his etchings and lithographs; but he was most noted for his miniature portraits. After a prosperous career he died in Vienna in 1862. He painted in the style of the end of the 18th century, and was an imitator of his teacher, Heinrich Füger. Christoph Ludwig Agricola
Christoph Ludwig Agricola (5 November 1665 – 8 August 1724) was a German landscape painter and etcher. He was born and died at Regensburg (Ratisbon). Life and career Christoph Ludwig Agricola was born on 5 November 1665 at Regensburg in Germany. He trained, as many painters of the period did, by studying nature. He spent a great part of his life in travel, visiting England, the Netherlands and France, and residing for a considerable period at Naples, where he may have been influenced by Nicolas Poussin. He also stayed for some years circa 1712 in Venice, where he painted many works for the patron Zaccaria Sagredo. He died in Regensburg in 1724. Work Although he primarily worked in gouache and oils, documentary sources reveal that he also produced a small number of etchings. Salomon Adler
Salomon Adler (before 3 March 1630 – 1709 in Milan) was a German painter of the Baroque period, active in Milan and Bergamo as a portrait painter. He was the mentor of Fra' Galgario. Born in Danzig ( Gdańsk), died in Milan. Biography Adler came from a family of cloth makers in Gdansk. He was of Lutheran faith. His manner of painting (reminiscent of Rembrandt and his predilection for oriental clothing in his portraits) suggests an early education in Gdansk. Perhaps he was again the same age Andreas Ruthardt the painter Daniel Schultz in Gdansk in the doctrine and probably went with him before 1653 to Italy (1653 is his baptismal record in Gdansk in Italy handed down). His artworks show the influence of portrait painters from Venice ( Nicolò Renieri and Tiberio Tinelli). In the years from 1679 to 1691 he was demonstrably in Milan.
