Overview The list is presented in alphabetical order ceremonial county. Foundations are listed alphabetically within each county. Communities/provenance: shows the status and communities existing at each establishment, together with such dates as have been established as well as the fate of the establishment after dissolution, and the current status of the site. Formal name or dedication is the formal name of the establishment or the person in whose name the church is dedicated, where known. Some of the establishments have had alternative names over the course of time; such alternatives in name or spelling have been given. An abbey is a type of monastery used by members of a religious order under the governance of an abbot or abbess. Abbeys provide a complex of buildings and land for religious activities, work, and housing of Christian monks and nuns. Landmark Trust
The Landmark Trust is a British architectural conservation, building conservation charitable organization, charity, founded in 1965 by John Smith (Conservative politician), Sir John and Lady Smith, that rescues buildings of historic interest or architectural merit and then makes them available for holiday rental. The Trust's headquarters is at Shottesbrooke in Berkshire. Most Trust properties are in England, Scotland and Wales. Several are on Lundy Island off the coast of north Devon, operated under lease from the National Trust for Places of Historic Interest or Natural Beauty, National Trust.
