Lindholmens or Lindholmen varv was a shipyard on the Göta älv in Gothenburg, Sweden. Named after the small leaf linden that grew on the island, Lindholmen was founded in 1848 and closed in 1976. It was at one time the largest employer in Gothenburg and produced some of the most powerful ships in the Swedish Navy, as well as the first modern oil tanker. Early years There is evidence that there was "a loading place (...) a loading dock with a storage bed of ship repair beams" () in 1844 and the first ship known to have been built at the yard, the brig ''Aurora'', was launched in 1848, but the history of the company dates from the foundation of a joint stock company called the Lindholmens Varvs- och Fabriksaktiebolag in 1853. Lindholmen (literally "The Linden Tree Island") is a former island in the Göta Älv river, now part of the larger island of Hisingen. Lindholmen was not attached to Hisingen until 1864, or perhaps even later, and the western part of the channel separating the two islands is preserved in the form of the inlet , which now functions as a marina. In the Middle Ages, Lindholmen was the site of Lindholmen Castle, which was briefly an important royal residence during the reign of Magnus IV of Sweden. Lindholmen Castle (Gothenburg)
Lindholmen Castle ( sv, Borgen Lindholmen) was a medieval castle on the former island of Lindholmen, which is now part of the larger island of Hisingen and lies within the urban area of modern Gothenburg. The castle stood on a rocky outcrop, which is still known as Slottsberget ("The Castle Hill"), overlooking the Göta Älv. This was an area of immense strategic significance in the Middle Ages, as at that time Hisingen straddled the Norwegian-Swedish border, and the mouth of the Göta Älv was Sweden's sole point of access to the North Sea. The fortress is attested for the first time in 1333, when King Magnus IV Eriksson of Sweden marked one of his letters as having been written ''in castro nostro Lindholm'' ('in our castle Lindholm'), and it appears again in a letter from 1334, this time spelt ''Lyndholmis''. Lindholmen Castle
Lindholmen Castle was a Danish fortified castle on the banks of lake Börringe in Svedala Municipality in Scania, Sweden. The only thing left of the castle is the hill on which the castle was built and a few stones in the ground on top of the hill. Medieval history Lindholmen became an important fortification in the defence of Scania during the Middle Ages because of its strong encircling defensive walls and double moats. At the time, a small river and treacherous marshes made the terrain surrounding the castle hard to navigate. Originally a private castle, it was in 1339 turned over to Magnus Eriksson (1316– 1374), king of Norway and of Sweden including Scania. In 1395, Queen Margaret I of Denmark used the castle as a location to conduct peace negotiations with the deposed king of Sweden, Albrecht von Mecklenburg (c. 1338–1412) who had been forced to give up the Swedish throne in her favor. Lindholmen Castle () is a castle ruins at Lidköping Municipality in Västra Götaland County, Sweden. History Lindholmen was first mentioned in 1514. The property was made a manor house in 1516.
