Le Vernet, Alpes-de-Haute-Provence
Le Vernet (; oc, Lo Vernet) is a commune in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department, and in the region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, in southeastern France. The name of its inhabitants is Vernetois or Vernetiers. Geography The village of Le Vernet is located in the Valley at altitude. Its population does not exceed 100 permanent residents, but it is often more than doubled each summer and winter, when the municipality becomes the place of departure for sightseeing excursions, particularly in the Valley, and a place of departure for the nearby ski stations ( Grand-Puy, and Chabanon). The municipality has two main villages, Haut-Vernet, perched high and Bas-Vernet below. Vernet-les-Bains
Vernet-les-Bains (; ca, Vernet) is a commune in the Pyrénées-Orientales department in southern France. It is a centre for visitors and holidaymakers. The village has a sunny climate (with, on average, 300 days of sunshine each year) and is set in a sheltered valley in the foothills of the Canigou mountain - which rises to a height of 2,785 metres (over 9,000 feet). Vernet-les-Bains is also known for its hot water springs. There is a professional spa/therapy centre in the village. Geography Localisation Vernet-les-Bains is located in the canton of Le Canigou and in the arrondissement of Prades. Camp Vernet
Le Vernet Internment Camp, or Camp Vernet, was a concentration camp in Le Vernet, Ariège, near Pamiers, in the French Pyrenees. Built in 1918 as a barracks but after WWI used as an internment camp for prisoners of war. From February 1939 to June 1944, it was used as an internment camp (concentration camp), first for Republican refugees (soldiers, their families, opponents of the Franco regime) fleeing Spain after Franco's victory in the Spanish Civil War, in particular some 12,000 refugees, including soldiers of Durruti Column and others of the International Brigades, under the legitimate French government and then, as of May-June 1940, under the Vichy government after German occupation during the Second World War.
