L-KO Kompany
The L-KO Kompany, or L-KO Komedies, was an American motion picture company founded by Henry Lehrman that produced silent one-, two- and very occasionally three-reel comedy shorts between 1914 and 1919. The initials L-KO stand for "Lehrman KnockOut". History By the spring of 1914, Henry "Pathé" Lehrman had directed several important Keystone Kops comedies including ''The Bangville Police'' (1913) and ''Kid Auto Races at Venice'' (1914), Charlie Chaplin's debut. Wooed away from Mack Sennett by producer Fred J. Balshofer, Lehrman left Keystone, along with star performer Ford Sterling, to found ''Sterling Comedies'' under the umbrella of the Universal Film and Manufacturing Co., later Universal Pictures. After a relatively short time, Lehrman was fired from Sterling Comedies as well and founded L-KO as a separate unit within Universal. Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle
Roscoe Conkling "Fatty" Arbuckle (; March 24, 1887 – June 29, 1933) was an American silent film actor, comedian, director, and screenwriter. He started at the Selig Polyscope Company and eventually moved to Keystone Studios, where he worked with Mabel Normand and Harold Lloyd as well as with his nephew, Al St. John. He also mentored Charlie Chaplin, Monty Banks and Bob Hope, and brought vaudeville star Buster Keaton into the movie business. Arbuckle was one of the most popular silent stars of the 1910s and one of the highest-paid actors in Hollywood, signing a contract in 1920 with Paramount Pictures for $14,000 (). Arbuckle was the defendant in three widely publicized trials between November 1921 and April 1922 for the rape and manslaughter of actress Virginia Rappe. Sunshine Comedies
Sunshine Comedies is a silent film era line of comedic short films. The two-reel film series was produced by Fox Film beginning in 1916. Actors featured in the series include Slim Summerville, Billie Ritchie, Ethel Teare, and Eli Nadel (as a child). Many of the comedies are lost but some survive. They were produced from 1917 until 1925. Comedian Al St. John appeared in and directed many of them during his three years with Fox after which he departed to work on Tuxedo Comedies (see Al St. John filmography for details). Alice Davenport, Bobby Dunn, and Charles Lakin were among the many supporting cast members. Harry Edwards (director)
Harry Edwards (October 11, 1887 - May 26, 1952) was a Canadian-born American film director and actor. He worked in films from the 1910s to the 1950s. Biography He was born in Calgary on 11 October 1887. He once worked for the now largely forgotten L-KO Kompany during the silent era. In his later years at Columbia Pictures, Edwards established a reputation as the studio's worst director. Both Vera Vague and the Three Stooges requested they not work with him. He is best remembered for his long collaboration with comedian Harry Langdon. He worked with Langdon in the 1920s in some of his best short films, and directed one of Langdon's best known films, the feature '' Tramp, Tramp, Tramp'' (1926). Harvey Parry (April 23, 1900 - September 18, 1985) was an American stuntman and actor whose career spanned the silent era and the disaster movie genre of the 1970s. Born on April 23, 1900 in San Francisco, California, Parry had been an Association of American Universities boxing and diving champion, and had a spell in a circus as an acrobat. His first film job was as a property man at the studios, before realising that his skills made him ideally suited to perform stunts, an increasingly in-demand feature of early cinema. He first worked for Mack Sennett in 1919, before doubling for Harold Lloyd in one of his early 'thrill' pictures, '' Never Weaken'' (1921). Wendell Phillips Smalley (August 7, 1865 – May 2, 1939) was an American silent film director and actor. Biography Born in Brooklyn, New York, he was the grandson of Wendell Phillips; he was the son of George Washburn Smalley, a war correspondent, and his wife Phoebe Garnaut, adopted by Phillips. Henry Bergman (February 23, 1868 – October 22, 1946) was an American actor of stage and film, known for his long association with Charlie Chaplin. Biography Born in San Francisco, California, Bergman acted in live theatre, appearing in ''Henrietta'' in 1888 at the Hollis Street Theatre in Boston and in the touring production of '' The Senator'' in 1892 and 1893. Mack Swain (born Moroni Swain; February 16, 1876 – August 25, 1935) was an early American film actor, who appeared in many of Mack Sennett’s comedies at Keystone Studios, including the Keystone Cops series. Harry Peter Gribbon (June 9, 1885 – July 28, 1961) was an American film actor, comedian and director known for '' The Cameraman'' (1928), '' Show People'' (1928) and '' Art Trouble'' (1934). Alice Howell
Alice Howell (born Alice Florence Clark; May 20, 1886 – April 12, 1961) was a silent film comedy actress from New York City. She was the mother of actress Yvonne Howell. Biography Early reviews of her movies describe her as ''"the scream of the screen".'' One reviewer likened her to a "sort of Charlie Chaplin, Douglas Fairbanks, Sr., and Max Linder."
