Korendijk
Korendijk () was a municipality in the western Netherlands, in the province of South Holland. The municipality covered an area of of which was water. With the municipal reorganization of the Hoeksche Waard on 1 January 1984, the municipality of Korendijk was formed out of the former municipalities of Goudswaard, Nieuw-Beijerland, Piershil (location of town hall), Zuid-Beijerland, and the island Tiengemeten. In addition to these villages, it also had the population centres Nieuwendijk and Zuidzijde. On 1 January 2019, it merged into the municipality of Hoeksche Waard. Goudswaard
Goudswaard is a village in the Dutch province of South Holland, located on the westernmost tip of the Hoeksche Waard, approximately 6 km south-west of Spijkenisse. Goudswaard was a separate municipality from 1817 until 1984, when it was merged with Nieuw-Beijerland, Zuid-Beijerland and Piershil to form the municipality of Korendijk. History The village was first mentioned in 1246 as "terram que Corendich dicitur". In 1439, the polder Oud Korendijk was created, however a settlement already existed outside the dike. The village itself was, and still is, sometimes known as ''Korendijk''. The etymology is unclear. Goudswaard is a dike village. The Dutch Reformed church is an aisleless church which was probably built in 1721 as a replacement of the 1441 church. Nieuw-Beijerland
Nieuw-Beijerland is a village in the Dutch province of South Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Hoeksche Waard, and lies about 3 km south of Spijkenisse. History The village was first mentioned in 1773 as Nieuw Beierland, and is named after the polder which was created in 1582. Nieuw (new) has been added to distinguish from Oud-Beijerland. The centre of the village has a grid structure. The Dutch Reformed church is an aisleless church with needle tower built in 1826. The grist mill De Swaen was originally built in 1703, but rebuilt in 1932 after a fire. The wind mill can turn, but the inner workings have been removed. Nieuw-Beijerland was home to 1,012 people in 1840. It was a separate municipality until 1984, when it became part of Korendijk. Tiengemeten
Tiengemeten is an island in the Dutch province of South Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Hoeksche Waard and lies about south of Spijkenisse. Before 1984 the island was administratively split between Goudswaard and Zuid-Beijerland, and until 2019 it was part of the municipality of Korendijk. The name ''Tiengemeten'' refers to an ancient area measurement; one ''gemet'' is comparable with one acre so the name means ''ten-acre island''. Ten ''gemet''s would be about , while the island is actually about long and wide. Zuid-Beijerland is a village in the Dutch province of South Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Hoeksche Waard, and lies about 10 km south of Spijkenisse. The village was originally called Den Hitsert. The current name was first used between 1839 and 1859. It is named after the eponymous polder. Piershil
Piershil is a village in the Dutch province of South Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Hoeksche Waard, and lies about 5 km south of Spijkenisse. History The village was first mentioned in 1452 as "vidimus Piershille", and means "hill of Pier (diminutive of Pieter)". The area was ''polder''ed in 1246, but lost in 1421 or 1479 and repoldered in 1524. Piershil developed after the repoldering. In 1582, Nieuw-Piershil was reclaimed and it was no longer an island. The village was damaged by fire in 1739. The Dutch Reformed church is an aisleless church with needle spire which was built in 1524. The tower probably dates from the 15th century. The northern wing was added in 1642, and redeveloped into a consistory between 1970 and 1971. The grist mill Simonia was built in 1854. Nieuwendijk, South Holland
Nieuwendijk is a hamlet in the Dutch province of South Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Hoeksche Waard and lies about 9 km south of Spijkenisse. Nieuwendijk was severely damaged during the North Sea flood of 1953, and 36 emergency houses were donated by Norway to the village. It has a little church, but it has been vacant since 2018. Hoeksche Waard () is a municipality in the western Netherlands, in the province of South Holland, consisting of the eponymous Hoeksche Waard and Tiengemeten islands. The municipality was formed on 1 January 2019 by the merger of the municipalities Binnenmaas, Cromstrijen, Korendijk, Oud-Beijerland, and Strijen. Oud-Beijerland
Oud-Beijerland () is a town and former municipality in the western Netherlands, in the province of South Holland, now a part of the Hoeksche Waard municipality. With a population of 24,575 in 2020, it is the most populous town of the Hoeksche Waard island. The town is located adjacent to the confluence of the Oude Maas and Spui River. The town of Oud-Beijerland also includes the communities Vuurbaken and Zinkweg. History After the St. Elizabeth's flood (1421), large parts of the islands Putten and Grote Waard were lost and became clay banks and salt marshes which would be inundated at high tide and be unsuitable for habitation. In subsequent centuries, portions of land would be reclaimed. Oud-Beijerland was formed in 1559 as "Beijerland" by Lamoral, Count of Egmont. Spijkenisse
Spijkenisse () is a city in the province of South Holland, Netherlands. Following an administrative reform in 2015, it is part of the municipality of Nissewaard, and has a population of 72,500. It covers an area of of which is water. It is part of the Greater Rotterdam area. History Archaeological evidence suggests that the area around Spijkenisse has been inhabited for several thousand years. The area's prehistoric inhabitants depended on fishing in the Maas and hunting in the surrounding swamps for sustenance. Spijkenisse also has an anthem, the song is called "Spijkenisse" by Rik Hoogendoorn. The song was released in 2012 and is very popular amongst people who live in Spijkenisse. The oldest known reference to the name ''Spickenisse'' is in a source from 1231. Spijkenisse is a portmanteau of the words ' ( spit) and ''nesse'' (nose) meaning "pointy nose." Bernisse () is a former municipality in the western Netherlands, in the province of South Holland. Since 2015 it has been a part of the municipality of Nissewaard.
