Keelung
Keelung () or Jilong () (; Hokkien Pe̍h-ōe-jī, POJ: '), officially known as Keelung City, is a major port Provincial city (Taiwan), city situated in the northeastern part of Taiwan. The city is a part of the Taipei–Keelung metropolitan area, along with its neighbors, New Taipei City and Taipei, respectively. Nicknamed the ''Rainy Port'' for its frequent rain and maritime role, the city is Taiwan's second largest seaport (after Kaohsiung). The city was founded by the Spanish Empire in 1626, then called Santisima Trinidad (Taiwan), La Santisima Trinidad. The Taipei–Keelung metropolitan area () also commonly known as Greater Taipei Area () is the largest metropolitan area in Taiwan. It is composed of 3 administrative divisions: Taipei, New Taipei City and Keelung. The region encompasses an area of and a population of as of 2019. It is the most populous and the most densely populated metropolitan area in Taiwan, with one-third of Taiwanese people living and working there. Keelung Islet
Keelung Islet (, also , in Taiwanese Hokkien: 雞籠杙/Ke-lâng-khit) is a small island in Zhongzheng District, Keelung, Taiwan and away from the Port of Keelung. It has an area of or . It is in length, and in width including the artificial harbor, the highest point is above sea level. History In ancient times, the island was seen as a sacred place by locals. It was rumoured that a female ghost named Shih-Yun lived there, to mourn over her husband who died in a shipwreck hundreds of years ago. In the modern day, the islet is primarily used as a military training base. Since 2001, it has been opened for tourists. Ferry services to the island operate daily from the port of Keelung. Taiwan Under Qing Rule
Taiwan under Qing rule refers to the rule of the Qing dynasty over the island of Taiwan from 1683 to 1895. The Qing dynasty sent an army led by general Shi Lang and defeated the Ming loyalist Kingdom of Tungning in 1683. Taiwan was formally annexed in April 1684. Taiwan was governed as Taiwan Prefecture of Fujian Province until the establishment of the Fujian–Taiwan Province in 1887. The Qing dynasty extended its control of Taiwan across the western coast of Taiwan, the western plains, and northeastern Taiwan over the 18th and 19th centuries. The Qing government did not pursue an active colonization policy and restricted Han migration to Taiwan for the majority of its rule out of fear of rebellion and conflict with the Taiwanese indigenous peoples. Zhongzheng District or Jhongjheng District () is a district of Keelung City, Taiwan. The district is the city seat of Keelung City. Geography Zhongzheng District includes Hoping Island ( 和平島) and the nearby Keelung Islet, as well as the more distant Pengjia Islet, Mianhua Islet and Huaping Islet. George Hsieh
George Hsieh (; born 5 October 1975) is a Taiwanese politician. Education and non-political career After earning a bachelor's degree in sociology from the University of Southern California, Hsieh attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He previously worked for ''The China Post'' and founded Hualien Media International. Political career Hsieh renounced US citizenship to join the 2004 legislative elections as a member of the People First Party. He joined the Kuomintang in 2006, and represented Keelung in the Legislative Yuan until 2016. In 2009, he proposed an amendment to the Computer-Processed Personal Data Protection Act that would make it legal for elected officials to examine personal records without informing the individual subject to investigation. New Taipei City
New Taipei City is a special municipality located in northern Taiwan. The city is home to an estimated population of 3,974,683 as of 2022, making it the most populous city of Taiwan, and also the second largest special municipality by area, behind Kaohsiung. Heping Island Park
Heping Island Park () is a park in Heping Island, Zhongzheng District, Keelung, Taiwan. History Strong wind over the years had eroded the coastal area of Heping Island, forming rocks with special shapes. The park used to be under military control for a long period of time. However, the ban was gradually lifted in the 1960s and 1970s. Since then, more tourists have come to the area. Parts of the parks were close starting the end of 2010 and was fully reopened to the public in June 2012. Features The park island is connected to Keelung mainland with the Heping Bridge. Zhengbin Fishing Port
The Zhengbin Fishing Port () is a fishing port located in Zhongzheng District, Keelung, Taiwan. History Built by the Japanese in 1934, the port used to be the largest fishing port in Taiwan and the main export port of Jinguashi copper mine during the Japanese colonial period. No longer the bustling center of its past, nowadays the pace of life is much slower in this corner of the city. However, Zhengbin Fishing Port is now popular amongst both locals and tourists for its row of 16 multi-colored houses situated on the bank. The port is located a five-minute walking distance away from the Keelung City Indigenous Cultural Hall.
