Kate Bruce
Kate Bruce (February 17, 1860 – April 2, 1946) was an American actress of the silent era. She appeared in more than 280 films between 1908 and 1931. She was born in Columbus, Indiana and died in New York City. In 1885, Bruce left Boone, Iowa in a wagon with a group of traveling actors at a time when stages were illuminated by oil lights. On Broadway, Bruce performed in ''The Starbucks'' (1903). Columbus is a city in and the county seat of Bartholomew County, Indiana, United States. The population was 50,474 at the 2020 census. ''The Fugitive'' is a 1910 American drama film directed by D. W. Griffith. Prints of the film survive at the film archive of the Library of Congress and at George Eastman House. The script was by John MacDonagh, who would later fight in the Easter Rising under the command of his brother, Thomas MacDonagh, one of the seven signatories of the Proclamation of the Irish Republic, who would be executed by the British along with 15 other leaders after the Rising. John MacDonagh's script was originally on an Orange/Green theme, and set in Ireland where unionists and nationalists were at war, rather than the American Civil War theme to which it was adapted. The plot involves two soldiers, one Confederate and one Union, who leave their families to go to war. ''What the Daisy Said'' is a one-reel film (about 12 minutes) made by D. W. Griffith for Biograph in 1910. Plot The film opens upon two sisters (Martha, played by Mary Pickford, and Millie, played by Gertrude Robinson) standing in a field of daisies. Millie plucks the petals off of one to divine whether he loves me... he loves me not. The girls part ways; Martha's next stop is the vegetable patch in which a lanky farmhand diligently labors with a shovel. She passes up the farmhand's polite offer to become sweethearts and promptly steals away to town to get her palm read by a woman fortuneteller.
