Otto Manninen
Otto Manninen (13 August 1872, Kangasniemi – 6 April 1950, Helsinki) was a Finnish writer, poet, and a celebrated translator of world classics into Finnish language. Along with Eino Leino in the early 20th century, he is considered as a pioneer of Finnish poetry. Manninen translated the works of Homer, Sophocles, Euripides, Heine, Ibsen, Petőfi and Runeberg into Finnish. Life Manninen was born in Kangasniemi as a farmer's son. He was one of the ten children of Topias and Matilda Manninen. After passing the matriculation examination in 1892, he was admitted into the University of Helsinki, receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1897. From 1898-99 he was an assistant editor of the periodical ''Valvoja''. His early translations of Heinrich Heine were published in ''Koitar'', the student magazine of the university, in 1897. Emilie Björkstén
Arkadia Emilie Björkstén (July 26, 1823 – January 15, 1896) was a 19th-century Finnish poet, often writing under the pen name ''e ***''. She published four well-received books of poetry between 1864 and 1886. Her work was deeply influenced by the poet Johan Ludvig Runeberg, with whom she had a long romantic affair beginning when she was a teenager. Early life Emilie Björkstén was born in 1823 in Kangasniemi, a town in central Finland. Hilding Ekelund
Georg Hilding Ekelund (18 November 1893, in Kangasniemi – 30 January 1984, in Helsinki) was a Finnish architect, from 1950 to 1958 a professor of housing design at Helsinki University of Technology and from 1931 to 1934 editor-in-chief of the Finnish architects' journal Arkkitehti (Finnish Architectural Review). His career as an architect spans the change in styles in Finland from the Nordic Classicism of the 1920s to the Modernism of the 1970s. Puulavesi
Puula (or Puulavesi) is a lake in the Kymi River area in the Finnish municipalities of Hirvensalmi, Kangasniemi and Mikkeli. Puula is above sea level, the area is , and it is deep at its deepest point, located near Porttisalmi at Simpiänselkä, which is the biggest open area of the lake. Two big lakes Suontee and Puula were one lake until year 1854, when the water level was lowered 2.5 meters. This has brought up geological stacks, which are formed by water. Water from lake Puula runs down to Vahvajärvi through Kissakoski Canal. Puula is known as a body of water with lake trout and lake salmon and it is therefore popular among trollers. The largest lake salmon in Finland in the 21st century, which weighed 12.4 kg, came from Puula. Multi-kilo trout are a typical catch from Puula. Virpi Katriina Sarasvuo (née Kuitunen, born 20 May 1976) is a Finnish former cross-country skier who competed from 1995 to 2010. She won a bronze medal in the team sprint event (with Aino-Kaisa Saarinen) at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin and earned her best individual finish of fifth in the individual sprint event in those same games. Hiski Salomaa (born Hiskias Möttö; May 17, 1891 – July 7, 1957) was a Finnish-American singer and songwriter. Career Referred to as the Finnish Woody Guthrie, Salomaa's songs portrayed the immigrant experience of working-class Finns. Between 1927 and 1931 Salomaa recorded eighteen sides for Columbia Records.
