Jesse William Curtis, Jr.
Jesse William Curtis Jr. (December 26, 1905 – August 5, 2008) was a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the Southern District of California and the United States District Court for the Central District of California. Education and career Born in San Bernardino, California, Curtis received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Redlands in 1928 and a Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School in 1932. He was in private practice in San Bernardino from 1932 to 1953, including after 1946 with his father, Jesse W. Curtis Sr., who was an associate justice of the California Supreme Court. Curtis was a Judge of the Superior Court of San Bernardino County from 1953 to 1962. Federal judicial service Curtis was nominated by President John F. Senior Status
Senior status is a form of semi- retirement for United States federal judges. To qualify, a judge in the federal court system must be at least 65 years old, and the sum of the judge's age and years of service as a federal judge must be at least 80 years. As long as senior judges carry at least a 25 percent caseload or meet other criteria for activity, they remain entitled to maintain a staffed office and chambers, including a secretary and their normal complement of law clerks, and they continue to receive annual cost-of-living increases. Senior judges vacate their seats on the bench, and the president may appoint new full-time judges to fill those seats. Some U.S. states have similar systems for senior judges. State courts with a similar system include Iowa (for judges on the Iowa Court of Appeals), Pennsylvania, and Virginia (for justices of the Virginia Supreme Court). Having been sterilized without knowing at the Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center, the mothers sued county doctors, the State of California, and the United States government. Having collected hospital records from a whistleblower, Chicana lawyer Antonia Hernandez led the lawsuit against powerful institutions. Plot summary The documentary introduces several mothers involved in the ''Madrigal v. Quilligan'' trial who recount the day they were sterilized, what their dreams and aspirations concerning family had been beforehand, and their involvement in fighting for Chicana rights. Family members are also introduced throughout, many having just learned about the sterilizations performed on their loved ones. Madrigal V
A madrigal is a form of secular vocal music most typical of the Renaissance (15th–16th c.) and early Baroque (1600–1750) periods, although revisited by some later European composers. The polyphonic madrigal is unaccompanied, and the number of voices varies from two to eight, but usually features three to six voices, whilst the metre of the madrigal varies between two or three tercets, followed by one or two couplets.
