Jerk (play)
''Jerk'' is a one-person puppet play by the American writer Dennis Cooper, made in collaboration with director Gisèle Vienne and performer Jonathan Capdevielle, based on Cooper's 1993 novel of the same name. From the programme ''Paris Calling: A Franco-British Season of Performing Arts 09''; see also ''Jerk'' on denniscooper.net and the ''Jerk'' page on Gisèle Vienne's website. It is based on the story of serial killer Dean Corll and his teenage accomplices David Brooks and Elmer Wayne Henley. The play develops the conceit that Brooks has learnt puppetry in prison and, as part of his rehabilitation, acts out the murders in which he participated via the use of glove puppets and ventriloquism. The performance also involved sections in which the audience read about the murders in pamphlets, entitled "Two Texts for a Puppet Play by David Brooks" that were distributed. The production premiered on 5 March 2008 in Brest, France. The play was also performed in an English-language versi ...

Jerk (dance)
The jerk was a popular or fad dance in the 1960s. Description The jerk is similar to the monkey. The arms move and hands move as if conducting. The wrists cross in front of the chest and then sweep out in time, or at half time, with the music. The hands are up at face level. On count 1, the outward sweep, the hands are quickly pushed out, giving the jerky motion. For a little more style, the fingers may be snapped on the two outward movements—the first and third counts of the hand motion. Songs featuring or suggesting the dance Released as a single in 1964 on the Money record label, "The Jerk" was a hit for the Los Angeles band the Larks. In the same year, the Miracles wrote and recorded " Come on Do the Jerk". Another Motown group, the Contours, released " Can You Jerk Like Me" in 1964. Dobie Gray released "Monkey Jerk" as the B-side to his 1965 single "My Baby". The Capitols performed a 1966 hit song called "Cool Jerk", written to capitalize on the dance's popularit ...

Soda Jerk
Soda jerk (or soda jerker) is an American term used to refer to a person — typically a young man — who would operate the soda fountain in a drugstore, preparing and serving soda drinks and ice cream sodas. The drinks were made by mixing flavored syrup, carbonated water, and occasionally malt powder over either ice or a few scoops of ice cream. The drink would then be served in a tall glass with a long-handled spoon, most commonly known as a " soda spoon", and drinking straws. Soda jerks were relatively common in the United States from the 1920s until the late 1950s; the occupation essentially no longer exists, due to economic and social trends. Origin of term The term ''soda jerk'' was a pun on ''soda clerk'', the formal job title of the drugstore assistants who operated soda fountains. It was inspired by the "jerking" action the server would implement to drive the fountain handle back and forth when adding soda. The soda fountain spigot itself was typically a sturdy, ...

Hypnic Jerk
A hypnic jerk, hypnagogic jerk, sleep start, sleep twitch, myoclonic jerk, or night start is a brief and sudden involuntary contraction of the muscles of the body which occurs when a person is beginning to fall asleep, often causing the person to jump and awaken suddenly for a moment. Hypnic jerks are one form of involuntary muscle twitches called myoclonus. Physically, hypnic jerks resemble the "jump" experienced by a person when startled, sometimes accompanied by a falling sensation. Hypnic jerks are associated with a rapid heartbeat, quickened breathing, sweat, and sometimes "a peculiar sensory feeling of 'shock' or 'falling into the void'". It can also be accompanied by a vivid dream experience or hallucination. A higher occurrence is reported in people with irregular sleep schedules. Men have also been known to experience this at a higher rate than women. Moreover, when they are particularly frequent and severe, hypnic jerks have been reported as a cause of sleep-onset in ...

Geomagnetic Jerk
In geophysics, a geomagnetic jerk or secular geomagnetic variation impulse is a relatively sudden change in the derivative (mathematics), second derivative of the geomagnetic field, Earth's magnetic field with respect to time. These events were noted by Vincent Courtillot and Jean-Louis Le Mouël in 1976. The clearest ones, observed all over the world, happened in 1969, 1978, 1991, and 1999. Data before 1969 is scarcer, but there is evidence of other global jerks in 1901, 1913, and 1925. Other events in 1932, 1949, 1958, 1986, and 2003 were detected only in some parts of the world. These events are believed to originate in the interior of the Earth (rather than being due to external phenomena such as the solar wind); but their precise cause is still a matter of research. The name Jerk (physics), "jerk" was borrowed from kinematics, where it means the jerk (physics), rate of change of the acceleration of a body, that is, the third derivative of its position with respect to time ( ...

Since 2009, jerkin' gained fans along the West Coast, East Coast, and in Europe, notably France and Germany, although it was heavily derided in the Southern United States. According to Oktane of Audio Push, jerkin' culture came from gang members dancing at parties, stating: "Jerking actually came from gang-banging. Like, it was a dance that gang members did. Like, the anti-dance. If you were in the party and everyone was dancing, he gang memberswould be doing the jerk." The dance itself consists of moving your legs in and out called the "jerk", and doing other moves such as the "reject", "dip", and "pindrop". Music The rap group New Boyz wrote and recorded a hit in Los Angeles entitled "You're a Jerk", while Audio Push wrote and recorded "Teach Me How To Jerk". As the jerk culture continued to fl ...

Jerk (physics)
In physics, jerk or jolt is the rate at which an object's acceleration changes with respect to time. It is a vector quantity (having both magnitude and direction). Jerk is most commonly denoted by the symbol and expressed in m/s3 (SI units) or standard gravity, standard gravities per second (''g''0/s). Expressions As a vector, jerk can be expressed as the first time derivative of acceleration, second derivative, second time derivative of velocity, and third derivative, third time derivative of position (vector), position: \mathbf j(t) = \frac = \frac = \frac where * is acceleration * is velocity * is position * is time Third-order differential equations of the form J\left(\overset, \ddot, \dot, x\right) = 0 are sometimes called ''jerk equations''. When converted to an equivalent system of three ordinary Differential equation#Ordinary differential equations, first-order Differential equation#Non-linear differential equations, non-linear differential equations, jerk equations ...

Clean And Jerk
The clean and jerk is a composite of two weightlifting movements, most often performed with a barbell: the clean and the jerk. During the ''clean'', the lifter moves the barbell from the floor to a racked position across the deltoids, without resting fully on the clavicles. During the ''jerk'', the lifter raises the barbell to a stationary position above the head, finishing with straight arms and legs, and the feet in the same plane as the torso and barbell. Of the several variants of the lift, the most common is the Olympic clean and jerk, which, with the Snatch (weightlifting), snatch, is contested in Olympic weightlifting events. Clean To execute a ''clean'', a lifter grasps the barbell just outside the legs, typically using a hook grip. Once the barbell is above the knees, the lifter extends explosively (mainly at torso or genitals), raising the bar as high as possible before quickly dropping into a squat and receiving it in a "racked" position in front of the neck and re ...

Jerk (cooking)
Jerk is a style of cooking native to Jamaica, in which meat is dry-rubbed or wet marinated with a hot spice mixture called Jamaican jerk spice. The art of jerking (or cooking with jerk spice) originated with Amerindians in Jamaica from the Arawak and Taíno tribes who intermingled with the Maroons. The smoky taste of jerked meat is achieved using various cooking methods, including modern wood-burning ovens. The meat is normally chicken or pork, and the main ingredients of the spicy jerk marinade sauce are allspice and Scotch bonnet peppers. Jerk cooking is popular in Caribbean and West Indian diaspora communities throughout North America and Western Europe. Etymology The word ''jerk'' is said to come from ''charqui'', a Spanish term of Quechua origin for jerked or dried meat, which eventually became the word ''jerky'' in English. The term ''jerk spice'' (also commonly known as Jamaican jerk spice) refers to a spice rub. The word ''jerk'' refers to the spice rub, wet marin ...
