Hugh Leslie
Hugh Alan Leslie OBE (17 April 1900 – 2 September 1974) was an Australian politician. He was a member of the Country Party and served terms in the Western Australian Legislative Assembly (1943–1949) and House of Representatives (1949–1958, 1961–1963). He was a newspaper editor before entering politics. Early life Leslie was born in Durban, South Africa on 17 April 1900 to Charles Leslie and Helen Gibson. His parents died when Hugh was very young and he was raised in a facility, educated at King William's Town and Grahamstown College, at Grahamstown. Leslie served in the South African armed forces from 1916 to 1919 and worked in small jobs until emigrating to Victoria, Australia in 1923 and arriving in Western Australia in 1927. Leslie became very active in Country Party affairs and became Wyalkatchem's branch secretary in 1928. Division Of Moore
The Division of Moore is an Australian electoral division in the state of Western Australia. History The Division was named after George Fletcher Moore, the first Advocate-General of Western Australia, and is at present a safe Liberal seat held by Ian Goodenough since the 2013 federal election, having changed significantly throughout its history in both geographical area and in political character. Due to significant demographic change, the seat's boundaries and constituency has evolved considerably since it was proclaimed at the 11 May 1949 redistribution. At that time, it was basically a rural electorate, which included parts of the Wheatbelt along the Indian Ocean coast to the north and east of Perth, the state capital — a similar region to that presently covered by the state seat of Moore. George Cornell (politician)
George Meredith Cornell (3 September 1910 – 6 July 1967) was an Australian politician who was a Country Party member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1947 until his death. He served as a minister in the government of Sir David Brand. Biography Cornell was born in Boulder, Western Australia, to Mary Ann (née Daws) and James Cornell. His father was also a member of parliament. Cornell was raised in Perth, and after leaving school studied accounting. He worked for periods at the Bank of Western Australia and the Agricultural Bank of Western Australia, and later at private firms in Perth and Kellerberrin (a small Wheatbelt town). Whip (politics)
A whip is an official of a political party whose task is to ensure party discipline in a legislature. This means ensuring that members of the party vote according to the party platform, rather than according to their own individual ideology or the will of their donors or constituents. Whips are the party's "enforcers". They try to ensure that their fellow political party legislators attend voting sessions and vote according to their party's official policy. Members who vote against party policy may "lose the whip", being effectively expelled from the party. The term is taken from the " whipper-in" during a hunt, who tries to prevent hounds from wandering away from a hunting pack. Additionally, the term "whip" may mean the voting instructions issued to legislators, or the status of a certain legislator in their party's parliamentary grouping.
