Hoofddorp
Hoofddorp (; ) is the main town of the Haarlemmermeer municipality in the province of North Holland in the Netherlands. In 2021, the population was 77,885. The town was founded in 1853, immediately after the Haarlemmermeer had been drained. History After the draining of the Haarlemmermeer, two villages, Kruisdorp (Crossvillage) and Venneperdorp (Vennepervillage), were founded in the centre of the polder. In 1868 they were renamed to Hoofddorp and Nieuw-Vennep respectively. Hoofddorp became more prosperous than Nieuw-Vennep, and it rapidly became the most important place of the district. Hoofddorp is a railway station in Hoofddorp, Netherlands located on the Weesp–Leiden railway. History From 1912 to 1935 the town had a station also called Hoofddorp nearer to the town centre at the ceased Hoofddorp–Leiden railway (''Haarlemmermeerspoorlijn'' from Aalsmeer to Haarlem, via Hoofddorp and Leiden). The former station building is in use as a residence. The current station opened on 31 May 1981. The station was rebuilt in 1998 to its current look. Hoofddorp has a depot/sidings further west from the station, this is the reason many sprinter services have their terminus over here. Intercity services terminating at Schiphol also use this depot before returning. The station consist of 2 double-track platforms and has 6 tracks. Haarlemmermeer () is a municipality in the west of the Netherlands, in the province of North Holland. Haarlemmermeer is a polder, consisting of land reclaimed from water. The name Haarlemmermeer means 'Haarlem's lake', referring to the body of water from which the region was reclaimed in the 19th century. Hoofddorp Train Disaster
The Hoofddorp train accident in the Dutch municipality Haarlemmermeer took place on 30 November 1992. Whilst ''en route'' to Vlissingen, a Koploper-type passenger train derailed at about 7.15 near Hoofddorp. Five people were killed and 33 were injured in the accident. Two days earlier an international train from Amsterdam to Paris derailed at nearly the same location. Cause Background During November 1992, Hoofddorp train station was undergoing reconstruction, especially the southern section that was being remodelled due to the extension of the railway yards in the area. For some time, an S-turn was required on a part of the route. For the construction of this, a tamping machine came to Hoofddorp to construct this S-bend, suitable for 90 km/h. However, the tamping machine quickly became defective and the workers were required to build the curve with other materials. Stelling Van Amsterdam
The UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the Defence Line of Amsterdam (in Dutch named ''Stelling van Amsterdam'', ) is a ring of fortifications around Amsterdam. It has 42 forts that are from the centre and lowlands, which can easily be flooded in time of war. The flooding was designed to give a depth of about , too little for boats to cross.
