Győr
Győr ( , ; german: Raab, links=no; names in other languages) is the main city of northwest Hungary, the capital of Győr-Moson-Sopron County and Western Transdanubia region, and – halfway between Budapest and Vienna – situated on one of the important roads of Central Europe. It is the sixth largest city in Hungary, and one of its seven main regional centres. The city has county rights. History The area along the Danube River has been inhabited by varying cultures since ancient times. The first large settlement dates back to the 5th century BCE; the inhabitants were Celts. They called the town ''Ara Bona'' "Good altar", later contracted to ''Arrabona'', a name which was used until the eighth century. Its shortened form is still used as the German (''Raab'') and Slovak (''Ráb'') names of the city. Roman merchants moved to Arrabona during the 1st century BCE. Győr-Moson-Sopron County
Győr-Moson-Sopron ( hu, Győr-Moson-Sopron megye, ; german: Komitat Raab-Wieselburg-Ödenburg; sk, Rábsko-mošonsko-šopronská župa) is an administrative county (comitatus or '' megye'') in north-western Hungary, on the border with Slovakia (Bratislava Region, Nitra Region and Trnava Region) and Austria (Burgenland). Győr ( hu, Győri járás) is a district in eastern part of Győr-Moson-Sopron County. ''Győr'' is also the name of the town where the district seat is found. The district is located in the Western Transdanubia Statistical Region. The M1 motorway ( hu, M1-es autópálya) is a toll motorway in northwestern Hungary, connecting Budapest to Győr and Vienna. The first section of the motorway opened in the 1970s, reaching the Austrian border at Hegyeshalom in 1996. It follows the route of the old Route 1 one-lane highway. Győr-Pér Airport ( hu, Győr-Pér repülőtér) is a public commercial airport near Győr, Hungary. History Győr-Pér Airport Development Ltd. was founded in 1994 with the aim of utilizing a former military grass airfield and development to an international regional airport. The airport is currently operated by Győr-Pér Airport Ltd. Airlines and destinations Negotiations have taken place with Wizzair on new routes in 2014, however no flights materialized. Districts Of Hungary
Districts of Hungary are the second-level divisions of Hungary after counties. They replaced the 175 subregions of Hungary in 2013. Altogether, there are 174 districts in the 19 counties, and there are 23 districts in Budapest. Districts of the 19 counties are numbered by Arabic numerals and named after the district seat, while districts of Budapest are numbered by Roman numerals and named after the historical towns and neighbourhoods. In Hungarian, the districts of the capital and the rest of the country hold different titles. Town With County Rights
A city with county rights (or urban county, Hungarian: ''megyei jogú város'', MJV) is a level of administrative subdivision in Hungary. Since 1994 all county seats are automatically awarded this status, and since 2012 this is the only way a new city may become a city with county rights. However, all cities that achieved this rank before 2012 have retained their status and there is no law that provides for the revocation of this title. As such, cities like Hódmezővásárhely or Dunaújváros that are not county seats are still cities with county rights. From 2006 until 2022, there were 23 cities with county rights. Since May 2022, there are 25 cities with county rights.
