Max Grundig
Max Grundig (; 7 May 1908 – 8 December 1989) was the founder of electronics company Grundig AG. Early life Grundig was raised by his parents in Nuremberg where he delayed his final school exams (''Abitur'') and completed training as an electrician. Grundig's father died when he was 12 and his mother had to support her five children on a factory wage. Young Grundig started his working life as a plumber's apprentice. Career In 1930, Grundig and a colleague opened a store selling radios under the name Fürth, Grundig & Wurzer (RVF), generating one million Reichsmark in sales by 1938. After World War II, business expanded with a successful range of consumer electronics. In 1972, the company became a corporation and was sold to Philips in 1984. Noted for their high quality, they were initially manufactured by the Grigsby-Grunow Company of Chicago. After Grigsby-Grunow's demise in 1934 during the Great Depression, Majestic Radios continued to be made through subsequent corporate ownership changes and reorganizations for another twenty-two years. Thomas Niedermayer, OBE (1928–1973) was a German industrialist, who was kidnapped by, and died while in the hands of, the Provisional IRA in 1973. He was managing director of the Grundig factory in Belfast, and the West German honorary consul for Northern Ireland. Abduction Niedermayer was kidnapped on 27 December 1973, at around 11 pm, from his home in West Belfast, by two IRA members who lured him outside his house on the pretext that they had accidentally crashed into his car. The abduction incident was witnessed by his two teenage daughters, who had answered the door to them, and by a neighbour who worked at the Grundig factory. An audio tape recorder, also known as a tape deck, tape player or tape machine or simply a tape recorder, is a sound recording and reproduction device that records and plays back sounds usually using magnetic tape for storage. In its present-day form, it records a fluctuating signal by moving the tape across a tape head that polarizes the magnetic domains in the tape in proportion to the audio signal.
