Grenada Democratic Movement
The Grenada Democratic Movement (GDM), chaired by Dr. Francis Alexis, emerged in May 1983 as an alliance of various exile groups opposed to the Maurice Bishop regime. The group was founded by Roy McBain in Brooklyn, New York. Francis Alexis
Francis Alexis, Grenadian politician and lawyer, currently serves as President of the Grenada Bar Association. He is also the leader of the Democratic Labour Party (DLP). Francis Alexis was born October 3, 1947 in Grenada. Alexis is a former Attorney-General of Grenada. He was admitted to practice before the High Court of Justice in Grenada on December 10, 1980, having earned his LLM (1976), LLB (1973) and BA (1971) from the University of the West Indies (UWI), Cave Hill, Barbados. Alexis also holds a PhD in Public Law (1980) from the University of Cambridge, England and an LEC (1977) from Hugh Wooding Law School, Trinidad and Tobago. Alexis obtained his secondary education, 1962–68, from the Grenada Boys Secondary School, Grenada. Alexis was appointed Queen’s Counsel in the Eastern Caribbean on August 7, 2008. Maurice Bishop
Maurice Rupert Bishop (29 May 1944 – 19 October 1983) was a Grenadian revolutionary and the leader of New Jewel Movement – a Marxist–Leninist party which sought to prioritise socio-economic development, education, and black liberation – that came to power during the 13 March 1979 revolution that removed Eric Gairy from office. Bishop headed the People's Revolutionary Government of Grenada from 1979 to 1983, when he was dismissed from his post and executed during the coup by Bernard Coard, leading to upheaval. Early life Maurice Rupert Bishop was born on 29 May 1944 on the island of Aruba, then a colony of the Netherlands as part of the Territory of Curaçao. His parents, Rupert and Alimenta Bishop, came from the northeast of Grenada, where his father earned only 5 British pence per day. People's Revolutionary Government
The People's Revolutionary Government (PRG) was proclaimed on 13 March 1979 after the Marxist–Leninist New Jewel Movement overthrew the government of Grenada in a revolution, making Grenada the only socialist state within the Commonwealth. The government suspended the constitution and ruled by decree until a factional conflict broke out, culminating in an invasion by the United States on 25 October 1983. History The New Jewel Movement (NJM) under the leadership of Maurice Bishop was the main opposition party in Grenada during the 1970s. In 1979, the NJM overthrew the government of Eric Gairy, which had ruled the country since independence in 1974. The NJM launched an armed takeover of the radio station, police barracks, and various other key locations in Grenada while Gairy was on a trip outside the country.
