German Figure Skating Championships
The German Figure Skating Championships ( ger, Deutsche Meisterschaften im Eiskunstlaufen) are a figure skating national championship held annually to determine the national champions of Germany. Medals are awarded in the disciplines of men's singles, ladies' singles, pair skating, and ice dancing. History Unofficial German Figure Skating Championships were held from 1887 to 1889 in Hamburg. The first official competition was held in Munich in 1891 in the men's category only. In its early years, Germany and the Austrian part of Austria-Hungary had joint championships. The second German champion Georg Zacharias, for example, is from Vienna, as was Gustav Hügel, who won in 1894. The first German Nationals in pairs were held in 1907 in Altona, for ladies in Olmütz in 1911, and for ice dancing in Cologne in 1950. West Germany
West Germany is the colloquial term used to indicate the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG; german: Bundesrepublik Deutschland , BRD) between its formation on 23 May 1949 and the German reunification through the accession of East Germany on 3 October 1990. Gilbert Fuchs
Gilbert Fuchs (1871–1952) was a German figure skater who won the first World Figure Skating Championships, held in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1896. He recaptured the world title ten years later in Munich. Relations with his constant rival Ulrich Salchow were strained. In 1906, Salchow did not compete in Fuchs' hometown of Munich, because he expected that he would be judged unfairly. Likewise, Fuchs did not participate in the 1908 Olympics as he felt the judges favored Salchow. Only once did Fuchs place higher in a competition than Salchow, at the 1901 Europeans in Vienna; he did not win the event, however, finishing in second place to Gustav Hügel of Austria. Fuchs mastered figure skating on his own, after learning gymnastics, weightlifting, and stone put. Tilo Gutzeit
Tilo Gutzeit (born 27 January 1938) is a German figure skater who represented West Germany in competition. He is the 1955 German national champion. He represented the United Team of Germany at the 1956 Winter Olympics, where he placed 10th, and at the 1960 Winter Olympics, where he placed 9th. He represented the club Düsseldorfer EG in national level competition. Originally the results of the 1955 German Championships were miscalculated. Due to this Tilo Gutzeit received only the silver medal there and 12-year-old Manfred Schnelldorfer was announced as German Champion. Several months after these championships, Werner Rittberger, who was a judge at these championships, recalculated the results. The results were corrected and the medals were physically exchanged. Tilo Gutzeit was also a potential skating partner for pair skater Marika Kilius. She had to split from Franz Ningel due to her height.
