Kurt Otto Friedrichs
Kurt Otto Friedrichs (September 28, 1901 – December 31, 1982) was a noted German-American mathematician. He was the co-founder of the Courant Institute at New York University, and a recipient of the National Medal of Science. Biography Friedrichs was born in Kiel, Schleswig-Holstein on September 28, 1901. His family soon moved to Düsseldorf, where he grew up. He attended several different universities in Germany studying the philosophical works of Heidegger and Husserl, but finally decided that mathematics was his real calling. During the 1920s, Friedrichs pursued this field in Göttingen, which had a renowned Mathematical Institute under the direction of Richard Courant. Courant became a close colleague and lifelong friend of Friedrichs. In 1931, Friedrichs became a full professor of mathematics at the Technische Hochschule in Braunschweig. Leutnant Friedrich Friedrichs (21 February 1895 – 15 July 1918) was a World War I fighter ace credited with 21 confirmed victories. Undaunted by an early invaliding by infantry combat during early World War I, Friedrichs switched to aviation. After serving reconnaissance duty, he moved to being a fighter pilot with Jagdstaffel 10. He shot down 11 enemy observation balloons, making him a top balloon buster; he also shot down 10 enemy airplanes. He was killed in action on 15 July 1918 when his Fokker D.VII burst into flames in midair. Paul Friedrichs (21 March 1940; Buchholz – 30 August 2012; Erfurt) was an East German professional motocross racer. He won three consecutive FIM 500cc motocross world championships from 1966 to 1968. Hanns Joachim "Hajo" Friedrichs (15 March 1927 – 28 March 1995) was a German journalist. Life Friedrichs was born in Hamm. From 1971 to 1981, he was a sports journalist for the German magazine ''Sportstudio''. 1985 Friedrichs went from ZDF to ARD. In Germany Friedrichs became famous as the anchorman for the television news program Tagesthemen, which he moderated alternately with Ulrike Wolf (*1944) and later Sabine Christiansen. Helmuth Friedrichs (born 22 September 1899 in Otterndorf – died probably February 1945) was a German Nazi Party official. He was an important figure in the Office of the Deputy Führer and its successor the Nazi Party Chancellery. Early years After secondary school Friedrichs enlisted in the German Imperial Army in 1916, seeing service in the First World War. Serving on both fronts, he was captured by the British in October 1918 and held as a prisoner of war until the end of 1919. Serving with the Freikorps and the army, he joined with Karl Dincklage, later a Sturmabteilung (SA) leader, in campaigning for the German National People's Party.
