Foodtown
Foodtown was a New Zealand supermarket chain owned by Progressive Enterprises. As with Woolworths, the Foodtown brand was phased out in the late 2000s, with all stores rebranded as Countdown by the end of 2011. Foodtown supermarkets were typically integrated with a shopping centre; the chain had few stand-alone stores. History 1958–1961 Foodtown Supermarkets Limited On 18 June 1958, the first Foodtown supermarket of 1,400 square metres was opened on a 1.1-hectare site at Otahuhu. Three small business owners – Tom Ah Chee, Norman Kent, and John Brown – sold their small businesses and pooled their resources to personally build and supervise construction of New Zealand's first American-style supermarket. Countdown (supermarket)
Countdown is an Australian-owned New Zealand full-service supermarket chain and subsidiary of Woolworths New Zealand, itself a subsidiary of Australia's Bella Vista’s Woolworths Group. It is one of two supermarket chains in New Zealand in terms of number of stores, although the rival Foodstuffs chain has a larger number of premises including smaller retail stores in rural areas. There are 184 Countdown stores, with 61 in Auckland. Tom Ah Chee
Thomas Henry Ah Chee (4 January 1928 – 18 March 2000) was a New Zealand businessman, who established the Foodtown chain of supermarkets. He also formed the Georgie Pie fast-food restaurant franchise. Born in Auckland to Chinese parents, he spent most of his early years in China before his father moved the Chee family back to New Zealand following the Japanese occupation of Canton. He took over the family's produce shop in 1951 and before long, recognised the potential for the introduction of American-style supermarkets in New Zealand. In 1958, Chee and two business partners opened the first Foodtown supermarket at Ōtāhuhu. This soon led to more Foodtown supermarkets being opened across Auckland, owned by Progressive Enterprises, a holding company established by Chee, his business partners and investor Brian Picot. Woolworths New Zealand Limited (formerly Progressive Enterprises) is the second largest grocery company in New Zealand (behind Foodstuffs), with revenue of NZ$6.2 billion for the year to June 2018. Alongside Foodstuffs, Woolworths NZ forms part of the New Zealand supermarket duopoly. Woolworths (New Zealand)
Woolworths was a New Zealand supermarket and general merchandise retail chain between 1929 and 2018. The brand was phased-out in the late 2000s. All but one store were rebranded as Countdown by 2011, with the exception in a location that already had a Countdown supermarket. In addition to groceries, some stores had a license to sell beer and wine. History Woolworths (1929–1979) Piercy Christmas opened the first Woolworths store on Cuba Street, Wellington in 1929. It expanded into a chain of stores, initially selling general merchandise. Woolworths Supermarkets (colloquially known in Australia as "Woolies") is an Australian chain of supermarkets and grocery stores owned by Woolworths Group. Central Auckland
The Auckland isthmus, also known as the Tāmaki isthmus, is a narrow stretch of land on the North Island of New Zealand in the Auckland Region, and the location of the central suburbs of the city of Auckland, including the CBD. The isthmus is located between two rias (drowned river valleys), the Waitematā Harbour to the north, which opens to the Hauraki Gulf / Tīkapa Moana and Pacific Ocean, and the Manukau Harbour to the south, which opens to the Tasman Sea. The isthmus is the most southern section of the Northland Peninsula. The Auckland isthmus is bound on the eastern side by the Tāmaki River and by the Whau River on the west; two tidal estuaries of the Waitematā Harbour.
