Engineering and Public Policy, informally known as EPP, is an interdisciplinary academic department within the Carnegie Mellon College of Engineering. EPP combines technical analysis with social science and policy analysis, in order to address problems in which knowledge of technical details is critical to decision making. EPP is one othree departmentsin United States universities that pioneered academic degree programs to address the profound societal changes brought about by technology. History What is now known as EPP began in 1971 as Engineering and Public Affairs (E&PA), an undergraduate double major program jointly developed by the College of Engineering and the School of Urban and Public Affairs (now the Heinz College). The Carnegie Mellon University College of Engineering (formerly known as the Carnegie Institute of Technology) is the academic unit that manages engineering research and education at Carnegie Mellon University. Everard Mott Williams
Everard Mott Williams (February 2, 1915 – October 24, 1972), noted scientist and educator, was born in New Haven, Connecticut. He received a Ph.D. from Yale University in Electrical Engineering in 1939, served as the head of Carnegie Mellon University, Department of Electrical Engineering from 1952–1969 and has over 100 patents. The broad scope of his accomplishments include prolific invention, versatile engineering consulting, pioneering teaching methodology, and perceptive academic administration. He pioneered in programmed instruction and teaching machines, innovated electric discharge machining and contributed to electronic countermeasures. Baruch Fischhoff (born April 21, 1946, Detroit, Michigan) is an American academic who is the Howard Heinz University Professor in the Institute for Politics and Strategy and the Department of Engineering and Public Policy at Carnegie Mellon University. The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (also known as NASEM or the National Academies) are the collective scientific national academy of the United States.
