Dutch New Guinea Dispute
Dutch New Guinea or Netherlands New Guinea ( nl, Nederlands-Nieuw-Guinea, id, Nugini Belanda) was the western half of the island of New Guinea that was a part of the Dutch East Indies until 1949, later an overseas territory of the Kingdom of the Netherlands from 1949 to 1962. It contained what are now Indonesia's five easternmost provinces, Central Papua, Highland Papua, Papua, South Papua, and West Papua, which were administered as a single province prior to 2003 under the name ''Irian Jaya'', and now comprise the Papua region of the country. During the Indonesian Revolution, the Dutch launched a police action ("Operation Product") to capture territory from the Indonesian Republic. Stephan Lucien Joseph Van Waardenburg
Stephan Lucien Joseph van Waardenburg (21 February 1900 – 4 April 1975) was the first Dutch-appointed governor of Dutch New Guinea. Early career Van Waardenburg was born in Buitenzorg in the Dutch East Indies to Dirk Adriaan and Stephanie (Gallas) van Waardenburg. After studying "Indology" at the Rijksuniversiteit in Leiden, he served as a government official in Celebes from 1921 to 1931. While serving in this capacity, he met Lucy Mathilde Rickson in Watempone, Indonesia, whom he married on November 7, 1927. He continued his civil service career as secretary to Jambi from 1931 to 1933, at the same time he continued his studies. He became a government official to Bandjermasin from 1933 to 1934, and was part of the head office Administration of the Outer Islands until 1941. Highland Papua ( id, Papua Pegunungan) is a province of Indonesia, which roughly follows the borders of Papuan customary region of Lano-Pago, shortened to La Pago. It covers an area of and had a population of 1,408,641 according to the official estimates as at mid 2021. Central Papua, officially the Central Papua Province ( id, Provinsi Papua Tengah) is an Indonesian province located in the central region of Western New Guinea. Western New Guinea, also known as Papua, Indonesian New Guinea, or Indonesian Papua, is the western half of the Melanesian island of New Guinea which is administered by Indonesia. Since the island is alternatively named as Papua, the region is also called West Papua ( id, Papua Barat).
