Durazno
Durazno is the capital city of the department of Durazno in Uruguay. Durazno is characterized by being the most central city of Uruguay. It has a population of more than 30,000 inhabitants. In the past it was the capital of Uruguay; today the capital is Montevideo. Location The city is located at the intersection of Routes 5 and 41, in the south of the department, close to the borders with the departments of Flores to the southwest and Florida to the southeast. It is only northeast of the city of Trinidad, capital of Flores department. Geography Durazno is situated on the south banks of the Yi River, a tributary to the Río Negro River. Transportation The Santa Bernardina International Airport is located just across the Río Negro river. While a commercial airport, as of 2021 it lacked passenger or cargo airline services. Santa Bernardina International Airport () is a military and general aviation airport serving Durazno, capital of the Durazno Department of Uruguay. The facilities are shared with the Tte. 2° Mario W. Parallada Air Base of the Uruguayan Air Force. The airport is across the Yí River, northeast from downtown Durazno. The Durazno VOR-DME (Ident: DUR) is located on the field. Antonio Alzamendi
Antonio Alzamendi Casas (born 7 June 1956) is a Uruguayan former footballer who played as a forward. His official debut was with the Uruguayan team Wanderers de Durazno. Alzamendi played for Uruguay at the 1986 and 1990 FIFA World Cups, scoring against West Germany in 1986. He played several years for River Plate of Argentina, winning both the Copa Libertadores de América and Intercontinental Cup in 1986. On Intercontinental Cup final, Alzamendi was named as man of the match and got the only goal of the game in the 28th minute when he headed into the net after his initial shot had hit the post and then came back off the goalkeeper. Route 5 (Uruguay)
Route 5 is a national route of Uruguay. In 1975, it was assigned the name Brigadier General Fructuoso Rivera, a national hero of Uruguay. It is one of the most important highways in country, along with Route 3, connecting Montevideo in the south with Rivera in the north and passing through the centre of the country. The road is approximately in length. Upon reaching Santana do Livramento (the Brazilian extension of Rivera), the road joins federal highway BR-158. Florida () is a department of Uruguay. Its capital is Florida. Uruguay's calling code is +598. Since 2010, national long distance calling was eliminated, thus there are no area codes in each city. Landline telephony ANTEL (Spanish abbreviation for National Administration of Telecommunications) is Uruguay's state-owned company for telecommunications. Previously in Uruguay, phone numbers used to have between 4 and 7 digits. To make a local phone call, you only had to dial those digits. To make a call between two cities from different departments, you had to dial zero, plus area code, plus phone number. Flores Department
Flores () is a department of Uruguay, positioned in the southwest of the central part of the country. Its capital is Trinidad. It borders Durazno Department to the north and east, Florida Department to the southeast, San José Department to the south and Soriano Department to the west. Margarita Emilia Martirena Cal (born 6 June 1966 in Durazno, Uruguay) is a retired Uruguayan sprinter from 1982 until 1992. She was a South American champion and holds the Uruguayan record in the 4x100 meter relay and the 100 meter dash. Early years Martirena was the daughter of a Entrepreneur. She studied at the Liceo Rubino. She moved to Montevideo in 1985 to study medicine at the University of the Republic and to train in track. Eladio Dieste (December 1, 1917 – July 29, 2000) was a Uruguayan engineer who made his reputation by building a range of structures from grain silos, factory sheds, markets and churches, most of them in Uruguay and all of exceptional elegance.
