Dubno
Dubno ( uk, Ду́бно) is a city and municipality located on the Ikva River in Rivne Oblast (province) of western Ukraine. It serves as the administrative center of Dubno Raion (district). The city is located on intersection of two major European routes, E40 and E85. The city is estimated to have a population of . It is located within the historic region of Volhynia. In Soviet times it was home to the Cold War facility Dubno air base. The city is also famous for its fortress. History Middle Ages First mentioned in a chronicle of 1100, when it was in possession of Yaroslav the Wise's grandson David of Brest , Dubno was even a seat of local princes for a short period of time. Dubno Raion ( uk, Дубенський район) is a raion in Rivne Oblast in western Ukraine. Its administrative center is located in Dubno. Dubno Castle
Dubno Castle ( uk, Дубенський замок, Dubens'kyi zamok, pl, Zamek w Dubnie) was founded in 1492 by Prince Konstantin Ostrogski on a promontory overlooking the Ikva River not far from the ancient Ruthenian fort of Dubno, Volhynia. Ostrogski castle was rebuilt in stone in the early 16th century under the Lithuanian rule when the city was part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. It had a church, a two-story palace, and an impressive array of 73 cannons. It was there that the treasury of the Ostrogski family was kept. These fabulous treasures brought the predatory Crimean Tatars to the castle on several occasions (at least two in 1577 alone). Prince Janusz Ostrogski, the last of his family, undertook major renovations of the castle in the early 17th century. Feodor Ostrogski
Prince Feodor Ostrogski (1360–1446) was a magnate in Volhynia of Rurikid stock, son of Daniil Ostrogski. In some sources he is called ''Teodor'', ''Fedko'' or ''Frederic''. He was active in the Hussite Wars and assisted Sigismund Korybut. Biography In 1386 Grand Duke of Lithuania Jogaila granted him possession of Ostrog castle and appointed him governor of Volhynia with the capital at Lutsk in 1387. In addition to Ostrog, Feodor became owner of Korets, Iziaslav (Zaslav), and other towns. On 4 September 1390, Knyaz Feodor commanded the defence of one of the Vilnius Castles during its siege by the Vytautas the Great, Teutonic Knights and ''knight guests'' from almost all of European states during the Lithuanian Civil War (1389–1392). Ostroh
Ostroh ( uk, Остро́г; pl, Ostróg) is a historic city located in Rivne Oblast (province) of western Ukraine, on the Horyn River. Ostroh is the administrative center of the Ostroh Raion (district).
