Damüls
Damüls is a village community and popular tourist resort in the district of Bregenz in the westernmost Austrian state of Vorarlberg. Damüls is known for its abundance of snow. In 2006, Damüls was awarded the honorary title "the snowiest village in the world". Population Geography Damüls is situated at an altitude of 1,430 m. It has an area of 20.92 km². It borders on the Bregenz Forest, the Biosphere Reserve Großes Walsertal, the Laternsertal, and all other Vorarlberg districts (Bludenz, Feldkirch and Dornbirn). The most famous mountain peak in the area, a popular hiking destination from Damüls, is the Damülser Mittagsspitze (2,095 m). History In the late Middle Ages, around 1300, the Walser ethnic folk group fled from the Swiss Kanton Wallis to this area seeking a better way of life and agricultural land. FIS Skimuseum Damüls
The FIS Skimuseum Damüls is a skiing museum located in Damüls in Vorarlberg (Austria). It is accommodated in the ''Kulisse Pfarrhof'' and displays exhibitions about local history and winter sports. After the exhibition was completely redesigned in the summer of 2017, it was certified by the International Ski Federation (FIS) and remains Vorarlberg’s only FIS ski museum. The building The Damüls parsonage is located prominently, directly below the church of St. Nikolaus in Damüls and had been empty for several years. On the basis of an initiative of Christian Lingenhöle, the two buildings (house and stable) were adapted accordingly and opened after minor alterations in the summer of 2013 as "Kulisse Pfarrhof". Damüls-Mellau (Ski Area)
Damüls-Mellau is a ski area in Vorarlberg, Austria. It is most popular for its snow safety. In 2006, the village Damüls was awarded the honorary title 'snowiest village of the world'. Geography The ski area Damüls-Mellau extends at an altitude between 700 m (village Mellau) and 2,050 m (mountain station Ragazer Blanken) in the rear Bregenzerwald. The villages in and around the ski resort are Damüls (1,430 m) and Mellau ( m). From Mellau, a detachable 10-seater gondola lift leads up to the ski area and the Roßstelle. Vorarlberg
Vorarlberg ( , ; gsw, label= Vorarlbergisch, Vorarlbearg, , or ) is the westernmost state () of Austria. It has the second-smallest geographical area after Vienna and, although it also has the second-smallest population, it is the state with the second-highest population density (also after Vienna). Mellau
Mellau is a town in the Bregenz Forest in the westernmost Austrian state of Vorarlberg, part of the district of Bregenz. Geography Mellau covers an area of 40.55 km2. Mellau lies at the foot of the Kanisfluh mountain which is considered to be the Bregenz Forest's landmark. History From 1805 to 1814 Mellau belonged to Bavaria but then reverted to Austria. In 1870 there was a great fire in Mellau: The church, the school, the rectory and 18 other houses were razed. After the Second World War, from 1945 to 1955 the town was in the French zone of occupation. Population The municipality has about 1300 inhabitants. Bregenz Forest
The Bregenz Forest (german: Bregenzerwald, ) is one of the main regions in the state of Vorarlberg (Austria). It overlaps, but is not coterminous with, the Bregenz Forest Mountains, which belong to a range of the Northern Limestone Alps, specifically the northern flysch zone. It is the drainage basin of the Bregenzer Ach river. Geography The regional inhabitants often divide the Bregenz Forest into two main areas, the Vorderwald ('anterior forest') and Hinterwald ('hinterforest'). The Vorderwald, with its hills and low mountains, is closest to the Rhine valley. The Hinterwald has the higher mountains, with altitudes of up to 2,000 metres. Dornbirn
Dornbirn () is a city in the westernmost Austrian state of Vorarlberg. It is the administrative centre for the district of Dornbirn, which also includes the town of Hohenems, and the market town Lustenau. Dornbirn is the largest city in Vorarlberg and the tenth largest city in Austria. It is an important commercial and shopping centre. Großwalsertal
The Großes Walsertal (german: Großes Walsertal, Großwalsertal) is a valley located in the Austrian state of Vorarlberg. It is a side valley of the Walgau and stretches from there north to the mountainous center of the country. The end of the valley borders on the Bregenz Forest. Alpine Transhumance
Alpine transhumance is transhumance as practiced in the Alps, that is, a seasonal droving of grazing livestock between the valleys in winter and the high mountain pastures in summer (German ' from the term for "seasonal mountain pasture", '). Transhumance is a traditional practice that has shaped much of the landscape in the Alps, as without it, most areas below would be forests. While tourism and industry contribute today much to Alpine economy, seasonal migration to high pastures is still practiced in Bavaria, Austria, Slovenia, Italy, France and Switzerland, except in their most frequented tourist centers.
