A dale is an open valley. ''Dale'' is a synonym of the word ''valley''. The name is used when describing the geography, physical geography of an area. It is used most frequently in the Scottish Lowlands, Lowlands of Scotland and in Northern England, the North of England; the term "fell" commonly refers to the mountains or hills that flank the dale. Etymology The word ''dale'' comes from the Old English word ''dæl'', from which the word "dell (landform), dell" is also derived. It is also related to Old Norse word ''dalr'' (and the modern Icelandic language, Icelandic word ''dalur''), which may perhaps have influenced its survival in northern England. The Germanic origin is assumed to be *''dala-''. ''Dal-'' in various combinations is common in placenames in Norway. Modern English valley and French vallée are presumably not related to dale. Dale, Pembrokeshire
Dale is both a small village and a community in Pembrokeshire, Wales, located on the peninsula which forms the northern side of the entrance to the Milford Haven Waterway. The village has 205 inhabitants according to the 2001 census, increasing to 225 at the 2011 Census. Dale is an unincorporated community in Grant County, Oregon, United States. It is located on U.S. Route 395 within the Umatilla National Forest about 17 miles south of Ukiah. It is near the Umatilla-Grant County border just south of the 45th parallel north. The first post office at this locale was established in 1887 and named Dorman after James W. Dorman, the first postmaster. The name was changed to Dale in 1891. The office may have been moved south from its original location in Umatilla County and it was shown as being in Grant County by 1903.
