Cumbia Rap
Cumbia rap is a spin-off of the original cumbia genre. It consists of a more traditional Colombian rhythm, as well as some hip hop music, hip hop and reggae type additions. Pioneers of cumbia rap include Crooked Stilo from Los Angeles (salvadorian origins) in 2003, El Gran Silencio, Control Machete and Cartel de Santa from Nuevo Leon in the late 90's and early 2000's, Santa Fe Klan from Guanajuato, Chicos de Barrio from Coahuila, in Argentina, as well as the Kumbia Kings from Texas. Early Tex-Mex or Onda Chicana acts such as La Mafia, La Sombra, and Selena y Los Dinos experimented with rap lyrics over cumbia beats in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Cumbia refers to a number of musical rhythms and folk dance traditions of Latin America, generally involving musical and cultural elements from American Indigenous peoples, enslaved Africans during colonial times, and Europeans. Chicos De Barrio
Chicos de Barrio is a Mexican musical group formed in 1995 in Torreon, Coahuila, Mexico. The group has 11 members, of which the percussion, harmony and swing are predominant. The group's music combines urban, hip hop, salsa, vallenato, reggae and other genres. Career Chicos de Barrio formed in 1995 in Torreón, Coahuila, performing locally and in surrounding areas. They were discovered by producer Amador Granados, who offered to record their first album, ''Triste Lagunera'', for the record label MCM (Metro Casa Musical). The album was recorded in Corona, California. Granados was sold the reproduction rights for the band's music. It took one year of work before the album was released. The following year, Chicos de Barrio began a tour of the United States. Kumbia Queers
Kumbia Queers is Argentine tropical-punk band, originally from Buenos Aires, Argentina in 2007. History The project was born in Buenos Aires in 2007, the union of She Devils, Juana Chang and Florencia Lliteras (Happy Makers), (Argentina), with Ali Gua Gua of Las Ultrasónicas (México). At first, they played covers of The Cure, Madonna, Ramones, Black Sabbath, twisting them to the rhythm of cumbia with lyrics full of queer poetry and humor. With their third album, 2012 appeared, the group turned to their own songs and lyrics mainly. In summer 2012, the band went on their third tour in Europe. Within 27 days they played at 23 locations from Stockholm to Madrid in a total of 25 concerts. 2014 was the band in Latin America and - at the invitation of the jury of the SXSW Festival - traveling in the United States. Selena Y Los Dinos
Selena y Los Dinos ( en, Selena and the Guys, Selena And the Dinos=Selena And The Dinos) was an American Tejano band formed in 1981 by Tejano singer Selena and her father Abraham Quintanilla. The band remained together until the murder of Selena in 1995, which caused the dissolution of the band in the same year. When Selena was signed with EMI Latin, EMI president José Behar told Selena that "the world wanted Selena, not Selena y Los Dinos." Selena then began releasing her solo studio albums under her name and her own logo title ''Selena'' instead of Selena y Los Dinos. Before Selena was signed with EMI, the band had sold more than 80,000 copies in the state of Texas. La Sombra
La Sombra de Chicago or La Sombra de Tony Guerrero or even the Windy City Boys is a Tejano band founded by Tony Guerrero. Originally from the Chicago suburb of Aurora, Illinois, the group gained national acclaim and success after moving to Corpus Christi, Texas, the headquarters of their label, Freddie Records. Career La Sombra released over twenty full-length studio albums featuring songs in both Spanish and English. Following numerous line-up changes, the group disbanded in 1995, briefly reuniting in 2008 for a number of live shows. La Sombra has been credited with influencing the Tejano and cumbia music fields in terms of musical style, dress, and concert performances as well as a generation of newer artists including the Kumbia Kings. La Mafia is a five-time Grammy Award-winning musical group. It has its roots in the Northside neighborhood of Houston, Texas, and has charted a course as a Latin music band. Kumbia Kings
The Kumbia Kings were a Mexican-American cumbia group from Corpus Christi, Texas, created by A.B. Quintanilla. Their music encompasses the styles of cumbia (hence their name), hip hop, and R&B. They produce songs in both Spanish and English. The band's producers from the beginning have been Quintanilla and Cruz Martínez. Quintanilla is the brother of the late "Queen of Tejano", Selena. Quintanilla played bass guitar for the group, while Martínez, husband of international artist Alicia Villarreal, played keyboards. Both co-wrote songs for the Kumbia Kings.
