Couvin (; wa, Couvén) is a city and municipality of Wallonia located in the province of Namur, Belgium. On 1 January 2018 the municipality had 13,782 inhabitants. Couvin is the second largest municipality of Belgium by surface area, after Tournai. The total area is , giving a population density of . The municipality consists of the following districts: Aublain, Boussu-en-Fagne, Brûly, Brûly-de-Pesche, Couvin, Cul-des-Sarts, Dailly, Frasnes-lez-Couvin, Gonrieux, Mariembourg, Pesche, Petigny, Petite-Chapelle, and Presgaux. Transport Couvin railway station provides the town with a rail link direct to Charleroi. The line terminates here; the next station is Mariembourg. Tourism There are a number of sites of interest to tourists in the municipality. One end of the Chemin de Fer à vapeur des Trois Vallées heritage railway is at Mariembourg. Mariembourg
Mariembourg ( wa, Mariyambour) is a town in the municipality of Couvin in the Province of Namur, Belgium. The town is named after Mary of Hungary, governor of what was then the Habsburg Netherlands, who ordered the construction of a fortress town there in 1542. The fortifications were demolished in 1853, but the former arsenal remains. By 1554, it was conquered by French troops, and has throughout the centuries frequently switched hands. The town has a church (built in 1542), a Neo-Gothic former town hall and is served by a railway station. Boussu-en-Fagne
Boussu-en-Fagne ( wa, Boussu-el-Fagne) is a village of Wallonia and a district of the municipality of Couvin, located in the province of Namur, Belgium. Archaeological excavations in the area have revealed a Neolithic settlement as well as a large Roman villa, and a subsidiary Roman road. Merovingian graves have also been discovered. From the early Middle Ages, the territory gradually became part of the lands of the lords of Chimay. A forge operated in the village between 1494 and 1850. A castle, ''château de Boussu-en-Fagne'', was built here, burnt down by Spanish troops before 1565 and successively rebuilt. Dailly, Belgium
Dailly ( wa, Dayi is a village of Wallonia and a district of the municipality of Couvin, located in the province of Namur, Belgium. Archaeological evidence show that a secondary Roman road passed through the area during antiquity. In 1021, the village was owned by Lobbes Abbey. Later, it was divided between Waulsort Abbey and Floreffe Abbey, and the lords of Chimay. Aublain
Aublain ( wa, Åblén) is a village of Wallonia and a district of the municipality of Couvin, located in the province of Namur, Belgium. A Gallo-Roman settlement possibly existed here during antiquity. During the Middle Ages, the village became part of the domains of the County of Hainaut. Count Baldwin II sold it to Otbert of Liège in 1093. A castle was built in the village in 1518 by a member of the Sezeille family, who had acquired the village in 1434. The castle has not been preserved.
