Compton is a city in southern Los Angeles County, California, United States, situated south of downtown Los Angeles. Compton is one of the oldest cities in the county and, on May 11, 1888, was the eighth city in Los Angeles County to incorporate. As of the 2010 United States Census, the city had a total population of 96,456. It is known as the "Hub City" due to its geographic centrality in Los Angeles County. Neighborhoods in Compton include Sunny Cove, Leland, downtown Compton, and Richland Farms. The city has a high poverty rate and is generally a working-class community. Furthermore, Compton is known for its high crime rate. Compton (also known as Mégantic—Compton—Stanstead) was a federal electoral district in Quebec, Canada, that was represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1867 to 1949, and again from 1968 to 1997. History Compton was created by the British North America Act of 1867. It consisted of the Townships of Compton, Westbury, Eaton, Clifton, Hereford, and Augmentation, Bury, Newport, Auckland, Lingwick, Hampden, Ditton, Winslow, Whitton, Marston, Chesham and part of the Township of Clinton. Compton Creek
Compton Creek is a major tributary of the Los Angeles River in and surrounding Compton in Los Angeles County, California. The stream drains a watershed of . and is the last major tributary to enter the Los Angeles River before it reaches the Pacific Ocean. The stream begins just east of South Main Street between 107th and 108th Streets in Los Angeles. Compton Creek passes through Willowbrook and runs in total. Most of its route is encased in a concrete flood control channel. Shortly after it passes under West Greenleaf Boulevard, it changes to an earth-bottom section with riprap banks. Joined near its end by East Compton Creek, the creek ultimately empties into the Los Angeles River just south of Del Amo Boulevard. Compton, Plymouth
Compton or Compton Gifford is a suburb of Plymouth in England. Once a small village, it was developed in the 1930s and now lies between the suburbs of Peverell Mannamead and Efford. There are two parts, Higher and Lower Compton named after two farms and now distinguished by their respective public houses. Although essentially infill development between older larger areas, Compton is distinctive in character. History The earliest evidence of man in Compton, is from around 3000 BC. At this time, Neolithic stone axes which have been found in Compton, were being made in Penzance, Callington and Camborne. Compton, Guildford
Compton is a village and civil parish in the Guildford district of Surrey, England. It is between Godalming and Guildford. It has a medieval church and a close connection to fine art and pottery, being the later life home of artist George Frederic Watts. The parish has considerable woodland and agricultural land, and the undeveloped portions are in the Metropolitan Green Belt. The village is traversed by the North Downs Way and has a large western conservation area. Central to the village are the Watts Gallery, the cemetery chapel commissioned by his wife for him, two inns and the parish church. Compton is a village and civil parish in the River Pang valley in the Berkshire Downs about south of Didcot which is buffered from neighbouring settlements by cultivated fields to all sides. The village is in a gently-sloped dry valley and the fledgling Pang seasonally enters from the north west and discharges in the south east and may be joined at the centre of the village by the Roden from the North, when winter bournes rise to fill their channels. Compton is a suburb of Wolverhampton, West Midlands, England. It is located to the west of Wolverhampton city centre on the A454, within the Tettenhall Wightwick ward. Compton Island is an island in the Queen Charlotte Strait-Johnstone Strait region of the Central Coast of British Columbia, Canada, located in Blackfish Sound to the east of Port McNeill All of Compton Island and three small islands offshore comprise Compton Island Indian Reserve No. 6, a.k.a. Compton 6. Name origin Compton Island was named about 1866 by Captain Pender for Pym Nevin Compton of Hampshire. From a Quaker family, she came to Victoria in the employ of the Hudson's Bay Company, working as a clerk. He was serving as a trading clerk on the ''Labouchere'' when he was taken captive by natives in Alaska in August 1862. He was stationed at Port Simpson (Lax Kw'alaams today) and at Fort Rupert where he was in charge. He returned to England in 1866 on the Hudson's Bay's ''Prince of Wales, but a few years later was in California, returning to Victoria afterwards, where he dies in 1879.
