Walter Boeykens
Walter, Knight Boeykens (January 6, 1938 – April 23, 2013) was a Belgian conductor and a world-renowned clarinetist. Boeykens' impressive discography, including several critically acclaimed performances, are testimony to his status as one of the most notable clarinetists of the 20th century. Boeykens remained active and was in concert frequently all around the world until his death in 2013. His career as a clarinetist Boeykens studied the clarinet at the Royal Conservatory of Music Brussels. In 1965 he won the International competition for contemporary music of Utrecht (Netherlands). Between 1964 en 1984 he was principal clarinetist of Belgian Radio and Television (BRT) Philharmonic Orchestra. Kalman Bloch
Kalman Bloch (May 30, 1913 in Harlem – March 12, 2009 in Los Angeles) was principal clarinetist of the Los Angeles Philharmonic for more than 40 years. Bloch studied with Simeon Bellison, a notable clarinetist for the New York Philharmonic. As recounted by Dorothy Lamb Crawford in her 2009 book "A Windfall of Musicians: Hitler's Émigrés and Exiles in Southern California," Bloch was hired at the age of 21 by then music director and recent Jewish emigre Otto Klemperer just before the onset of World War II. Bloch also performed on several film soundtracks, including those of John Williams, Walt Disney's Fantasia, Sunset Boulevard, For Whom the Bell Tolls, North by Northwest, The Wizard of Oz, and Chinatown. He was also a prolific collaborator in Southern California, playing for and recording with conductors such as Arnold Schoenberg and Igor Stravinsky upon their move to Los Angeles along with many other Jewish artists and intellectuals during and after World War II. Ernest Ačkun
Ernest Ačkun (Ернест Ачкун) (March 27, 1930 – September 28, 2001) was a Yugoslav clarinetist. Early life Ernest Ačkun was born in Hrastnik, Slovenia, which was then part of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. He completed his studies at the Belgrade Academy of Music under Bruno Brun, and then studied at the Paris Conservatory under Ulysse Delécluse. Performance and teaching activities Ačkun gave concerts as a soloist in nearly all great towns in Yugoslavia, as well as in France, West Germany, Austria, Italy and Bulgaria, playing under the leadership of such conductors as Zubin Mehta, Jean Martinon, Charles Bruck, Krešimir Baranović, Oskar Danon, Milan Horvat, Živojin Zdravković. Bruno Brun
Bruno Brun (1910–1978) was a Yugoslav clarinetist and professor at the Belgrade Music Academy. Education Brun was born in Hrastnik, Austro-Hungary, now Slovenia. Louis Cahuzac
Louis (Jean Baptiste) Cahuzac (12 July 1880 – 9 August 1960) was a French clarinetist and composer. Cahuzac was an outstanding performer and one of the few clarinetists who made a career as a soloist in the first part of the 20th century. Life and career Louis Cahuzac was born in Quarante, in Languedoc, in the south of France. His teachers were Felix Pagès in Toulouse conservatoire and Cyrille Rose in the Paris Conservatory. Cahuzac made the first recording of Carl Nielsen's Clarinet Concerto, a piece originally written for the Danish clarinetist Aage Oxenvad. On 22 November 1956, at the age of 76, he recorded the Clarinet Concerto in A major by Paul Hindemith for the EMI music label under the composer's baton. Shirley Brill ( he, שירלי בריל; born 1982) is an Israeli clarinetist living in Germany. Education and career Born in Petah Tikva, Israel, Brill received her musical education in Israel from Yitzhak Katzap at the Petah Tikva Conservatory. József Balogh (born 1956) is a Hungarian clarinetist. Balogh was a student of Béla Kovács at the Franz Liszt College of Music in Budapest. He is a solo clarinetist in the Budapest Opera and Budapest Radio Symphony Orchestra. He has been the president of the Hungarian Clarinet Society since 1994. Carl Baermann
Carl Baermann (24 October 1810 – 23 May 1885) was a clarinetist and composer from Munich, Germany. Life and career He was the son of noted clarinet virtuoso Heinrich Baermann and Helene Harlas. As a child he was taught the clarinet and the basset horn by his father. He played occasionally in the Munich court orchestra when he was 14 years old, and was appointed its second clarinetist in 1832. When his father retired in 1834, Carl succeeded his father as principal clarinetist. He held that position until he retired in 1880. He toured Europe with his father in 1827, 1832 and 1838. In 1833 they premiered Felix Mendelssohn's ''Konzert Stücke'', Opp. 113 & 114, (''Concert Pieces'') to great acclaim. Carl Baermann's compositions, 88 opus numbers, were popular with clarinet virtuosos. Baermann developed the Baermann-Ottensteiner key system for the clarinet, which was based on the Müller system. Dimitri Ashkenazy
Dimitri Thor Ashkenazy (born October 8, 1969 in New York City) is an Icelandic clarinetist living in Switzerland. He is the son of pianist and conductor Vladimir Ashkenazy and has toured Europe with him, as well as performing under him with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. Biography Dimitri Ashkenazy was born into a musically successful family: he is the son of pianist and conductor Vladimir Ashkenazy and Þórunn Jóhannsdóttir, and his brother Vovka is also a professional pianist. In 1978 he moved with his parents from his native Iceland to Switzerland, where he has lived ever since. At the age of 9, he was involved in a waterskiing accident in Greece when one of his legs was slashed by the propeller of a speedboat, severing the sciatic nerve. Michel Arrignon
Michel Arrignon is a French clarinetist and professor of clarinet at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris and at the Reina Sofía School of Music in Madrid. Arrignon studied at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris. He played in the Orchestre Mondial des Jeunesses Musicales and won second prize in the Geneva Concours International d'Exécution Musicale. He co-founded the Ensemble Intercontemporain with Pierre Boulez. He later joined the Orchestre de l'Opéra national de Paris. He also founded the O. Messian Quartet.
