Cathay Organisation
Cathay Organisation Holdings Limited is one of Singapore's leisure and entertainment groups. It has the first THX cinema hall and digital cinema in Singapore. The group has operations in Singapore and Malaysia. History Associated Theatres Ltd was established on 18 July 1935 in Singapore by Loke Cheng Kim, her son Loke Wan Tho, her relative Khoo Teik Ee, and a British friend Max Baker. In 1936, the company opened its first cinema in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the Pavilion, with 1200 seats. The year 1939 saw the landmark Cathay Building open in Singapore with the Cathay Cinema premiering Sir Alexander Korda's ''The Four Feathers''. Cathay Cinema was Singapore's first air-conditioned cinema and also the first skyscraper, the tallest in Southeast Asia during that time. Linda Lin Dai (; 26 December 1934 – 17 July 1964), born Ching Yuetyue (程月如), was a Chinese actress of Hong Kong films made in Mandarin during the 1950s–60s. She was a star actress of the Shaw Brothers Studio. She was the daughter of Cheng Siyuan (程思遠), the secretary of the KMT Chinese President Li Zongren, and Vice Chairman of the CPPCC. Lin Dai was awarded the Best Actress at the Asia Pacific Film Festival four times for her performances in films produced by Shaw Studio. Chinatown (, Yale: ''Ngàuhchēséui'', ms, Kreta Ayer, ta, சைனா டவுன்) is a subzone and ethnic enclave located within the Outram district in the Central Area of Singapore. Featuring distinctly Chinese cultural elements, Chinatown has had a historically concentrated ethnic Chinese population. Chinatown is considerably less of an enclave than it once was. The Cathay
The Cathay is a mixed-use 17-storey cinema, shopping mall and apartment building located at Handy Road and Mount Sophia in the Museum Planning Area of Singapore. History Owned and managed by Cathay Organisation, the original building was opened in 1939 as Cathay Building. In 2000, it was closed and partially demolished for redevelopment. Elements of the old Cathay Cinema, including its facade which was conserved as a national monument, together with a modern-day design by Paul Tange of Tange Associates Japan and RDC Architects Pte Ltd Singapore, were incorporated into the new building. Background The Cathay was opened on 24 March 2006. The building housed retail, food & beverage outlets and an 8-screen Cathay Cineplex which includes The Picturehouse. Cathay Cineplex Orchard
Cathay Cineleisure Orchard is an urban mall located at 8 Grange Road, Singapore. The building is managed by Cathay Organisation under its subsidiary company of Cathay Cineleisure International. Background The mall opened in October 1997 on the site of the previous building, the old Orchard Cinema, which was torn down in 1994. The youth-oriented mall houses a mix of food and beverage outlets, fashion shops and a hair salon. It also includes a karaoke lounge on Level 8 and an indoor trampoline park on Level 9. Cathay Cineplex operates 12 movie screens in the mall. The building has won accolades such as the "''SIA-ICI (Singapore Institute of Architects - ICI Paints) Colour Award''" for its creative use of colours in its building design. ''The Big Boss'' (, lit. "The Big Brother from Tangshan"; originally titled ''Fists of Fury'' in America) is a 1971 Hong Kong action martial arts film produced by Raymond Chow and starring Bruce Lee in his first major film in a lead role. The film also stars Maria Yi, James Tien, Tony Liu, and Nora Miao.
