Camden, Arkansas
Camden is a city in and the county seat of Ouachita County in the south-central part of the U.S. state of Arkansas. The city is located about 100 miles south of Little Rock. Situated on bluffs overlooking the Ouachita River, the city developed because of the river. The recorded history began in 1782 when a Spanish military post was established on the site of an old French trading post called ''Écore à Fabri.'' When Ouachita County was formed in 1842, American settlers changed the name to Camden. The city became an important port during the steamboat era when Camden became known as the “Queen City” of the Ouachita. In 1864, Camden became the unintended focus of the Red River Campaign, a major Civil War effort resulting in several significant battles. In 2000, Camden had a population of 13,154, but it lost 7.4 percent of its residents and recorded 12,183 in 2010. Camden is an unincorporated community located on Mississippi Highway 17 in Madison County, Mississippi, United States. Camden is located approximately northeast of Sharon and is located within the Jackson Metropolitan Statistical Area. Although unincorporated, Camden has a post office and a zip code of 39045. The town was named for Camden, South Carolina by Mississippi Governor William McWillie. McWillie was raised in Camden, South Carolina, and was in The South Carolina House of Representatives and the South Carolina Senate. He moved to Mississippi in 1845, where he was elected to Congress, and then, in 1858, he was elected the 22nd Governor of Mississippi. Its boundaries are 53rd Avenue North to the north, the Mississippi River to the east, Lowry Avenue North to the south, and Xerxes Avenue North to the west. History Camden was founded as early as 1837 by landowner Easton Chester and his sons Orson and Nathan. The community developed around several sawmills, and a post office named Cranbrook opened on August 10, 1837. The office name was changed to Camden on September 7, 1840. The name was chosen at random by drawing from a hat, which was a name proposed by sawmill owner Easton Chester after his hometown of Camden, New York.
