Burtonwood
Burtonwood is a village in the civil parish of Burtonwood and Westbrook, in the Borough of Warrington, Cheshire, England. Within the boundaries of the historic county of Lancashire, the name Burtonwood is known worldwide as the location of the former RAF Station Burtonwood military camp. Burtonwood village itself is a few miles away from the site of the former station. The civil parish also includes Westbrook, which is a council ward and suburb of Warrington. According to the 2001 census, the population of the entire civil parish was 11,265. Retrieval Date: 8 September 2007. History Burtonwood was a chapelry in the ancient parish of Warrington, in the West Derby Hundred of Lancashire. It was later created a civil parish and was part of the Warrington Poor Law Union and then the Warrington Rural District. RAF Burtonwood
Royal Air Force Burtonwood (or RAF Burtonwood) is a former Royal Air Force and United States Army Air Forces base that was located in Burtonwood, Northwest of Warrington in Cheshire, England. The base was opened in 1940 in response to World War II by the RAF and in 1942 it was transferred to the United States of America for war operations. The base was home to 18,000 American servicemen at the end of the war. In 1946 the base was transferred back to the United Kingdom however United States operations continued. The base officially closed in 1991 and since then the runway and most of the associated buildings have been demolished. RAF Burtonwood Heritage Centre was opened on part of the former base and focuses on the lives of the servicemen, the war and the airplanes at the base. Warrington
Warrington () is a town and unparished area in the borough of the same name in the ceremonial county of Cheshire, England, on the banks of the River Mersey. It is east of Liverpool, and west of Manchester. The population in 2019 was estimated at 165,456 for the town's urban area, and just over 210,014 for the entire borough, the latter being more than double that of 1968 when it became a new town. Warrington is the largest town in the ceremonial county of Cheshire. In 2011 the unparished area had a population of 58,871. Warrington North is a parliamentary constituency represented in the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom since 2019 by Charlotte Nichols of the Labour Party. Collins Green Railway Station
Collins Green railway station was a railway station in Burtonwood, Warrington, England. It was in operation between 1830 and 1951. Opening and location The station was opened by the Liverpool & Manchester Railway (L&MR) on 15 September 1830. The station lay on the L&MR's line between St Helens Junction and Earlestown stations. It was situated in the hamlet of Collins Green, Lancashire (now in Cheshire), one mile (1.6 km) north of Burtonwood village. The station was located just east of the point where the railway line passed over Penkford Lane ( B5204). The station was initially a request stop manned by a railway policeman in charge of the level-crossing. Westbrook, Cheshire
Westbrook is a ward and suburb in north west Warrington, in the Warrington district, in the ceremonial county of Cheshire, England. Within the boundaries of the historic county of Lancashire, it forms part of the civil parish of Burtonwood and Westbrook, to part of which it gives its name. The main part of Westbrook was built in the early 1980s. There are new estates being developed, the newest (Chapelford) was started in 2001. Facilities The original estate (area around Westbrook Crescent and Cromwell Avenue) has an out of town shopping area. The shopping centre is known as the "Westbrook Centre", and has a large Asda supermarket as well as many smaller specialist stores. Westbrook also has a cinema adjacent to the shopping centre. Warrington Rural District
Warrington Rural District was, from 1894 to 1974, a local government district in the administrative county of Lancashire. It was formed a rural district under the Local Government Act 1894 from the Warrington rural sanitary district, and was centred on territory north of the town of Warrington (which was broadly shared with, but separate from, the County Borough of Warrington). In 1974, the district was abolished and became part of the new Borough of Warrington which was transferred to Cheshire. Newton-le-Willows
Newton-le-Willows is a market town in the Metropolitan Borough of St Helens, Merseyside, England. The population at the United Kingdom Census 2011, 2011 census was 22,114. Newton-le-Willows is on the eastern edge of St Helens, south of Wigan and north of Warrington. The Newton township was historically largely pastoral lands, with the mining industry encroaching from the north and the west as time went on. The township (often referred to as Newton in Makersfield at that time) is documented since at least the 12th century. In the early 19th century the township saw significant urban development to support the construction of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway. St Helens Junction railway station is a railway station serving St Helens, Merseyside, England. It is in Sutton, three miles southeast of St Helens town centre. The station is on the electrified northern route of the Liverpool to Manchester Line, east of Liverpool Lime Street (on the former Liverpool and Manchester Railway). The station and all trains calling there are presently operated by Northern Trains. Merseytravel is the passenger transport executive, responsible for the coordination of public transport in the Liverpool City Region in North West England. Merseytravel was established on 1 December 1969 as the Merseyside Passenger Transport Executive.
