Broadway Theatre (53rd Street)
The Broadway Theatre (formerly Universal's Colony Theatre, B.S. Moss's Broadway Theatre, Earl Carroll's Broadway Theatre, and Ciné Roma) is a Broadway theater at 1681 Broadway (near 53rd Street) in the Theater District of Midtown Manhattan in New York City. Opened in 1924, the theater was designed by Eugene De Rosa for Benjamin S. Moss, who originally operated the venue as a movie theater. It has approximately 1,763 seats across two levels and is operated by The Shubert Organization. The Broadway Theatre is one of the few Broadway theaters that is physically on Broadway. The Broadway's facade was originally designed in the Italian Renaissance style and was made of brick and terracotta. The modern facade of the theater is made of polished granite and is part of the office building at 1675 Broadway, completed in 1990. Broadway () is a road in the U.S. state of New York. Broadway runs from State Street at Bowling Green for through the borough of Manhattan and through the Bronx, exiting north from New York City to run an additional through the Westchester County municipalities of Yonkers, Hastings-On-Hudson, Dobbs Ferry, Irvington, and Tarrytown, and terminating north of Sleepy Hollow.There are four other streets named "Broadway" in New York City's remaining three boroughs: one each in Brooklyn ( see main article) and Staten Island, and two in Queens (one running from Astoria to Elmhurst, and the other in Hamilton Beach). The Broadway was a mid-level department store chain headquartered in Los Angeles, California. Founded in 1896 by English-born Arthur Letts Sr., and named after what was once the city's main shopping street, the Broadway became a dominant retailer in Southern California and the Southwest. Its fortunes eventually declined, and Federated Department Stores (now Macy's, Inc.) bought the chain in 1995. In 1996, Broadway stores were either closed or converted into Macy's and Bloomingdales. History Origins In 1895, J. A. Williams formed J. A. Williams & Co., built and opened his Broadway Department Store on August 29, 1895. It was Abbott's first big hit on his way to becoming "the most famous play doctor of all time" after he "rejiggered" Dunning's play. Broadway Centrum was a television studio complex located in the New Manila district of Quezon City at Aurora Boulevard cor. Broadway (formerly Doña Juana Rodriguez) Avenue, Quezon City. It is currently owned by the Empire East Land Holdings, a subsidiary of Megaworld Corporation. It was previously owned by GMA Network. Broadway Cinema is an independent cinema in the city of Nottingham, England in the United Kingdom. It is located in the Hockley area. In 2009, it was rated as one of the best cinemas in the world by Total Film magazine. History The site now occupied by the cinema began its life as the Broad Street Wesleyan Church, which was built in 1839 by the architect S. S. Rawlinson. This church is reputedly where the founder of the Salvation Army, William Booth, was converted. Since the 1960s, the site has housed the Co-operative Education Centre, the Nottingham Film Society, City Lights Cinema and, since 1982, the Broadway Cinema. In 1993, the cinema was the venue for the UK premiere of Quentin Tarantino's '' Pulp Fiction'', showing it immediately after its screening at the Cannes Film Festival. ''Broadway'' is a 1929 film directed by Paul Fejos from the 1926 Broadway (play), play of the same name by George Abbott and Philip Dunning. It stars Glenn Tryon, Evelyn Brent, Paul Porcasi, Robert Ellis (actor, born 1892), Robert Ellis, Merna Kennedy and Thomas E. Jackson.
