Brickell ( ) is a neighborhood in Miami, Florida located directly east of Interstate 95, south of the Central Business District (Miami), historic CBD, and north of Coconut Grove. Brickell is known as the financial district in Miami, as well as South Florida. Brickell was founded in the mid-19th century, growing to become Miami's "Millionaires' Mile, Millionaire's Row" in the early 20th century after the construction of lavish mansions along Brickell Avenue by Mary Brickell; both the avenue and neighborhood were named for Ms. Brickell and her husband, William Brickell. By the 1970s, office towers, hotels and apartments began replacing the historic mansions. Mary Brickell
William Brickell (May 22, 1817(?) – January 14, 1908) joined Julia Tuttle as a co-founder of Miami, Florida. During the Civil War, Brickell and his wife Mary, whom he met and married in Australia, lived in the White House while he worked as an aide to President Abraham Lincoln. In 1868, the Brickells purchased two tracts of land, one of which stretched from Coconut Grove to the Miami River, which they purchased from Mrs. Harriet English and her brother Richard Fitzpatrick who had acquired it by grant from the King of Spain. The family moved to southern Florida from Cleveland, Ohio, arriving by ship in 1871. He and his family opened a trading post and post office in their home on the south bank of the Miami River, near the site of Fort Dallas. Brickell Avenue is a north–south road that was formerly part of U.S. Route 1, in Miami, Florida, just south of the Miami River. North of the Brickell Avenue Bridge, U.S. Route 1 is known as Biscayne Boulevard.
